Dr. Robert L. Jackson is Associate Provost of the King's College whose particular interest is the college’s Foundations of Education minor, which explores the history and philosophy of education with an eye to major intellectual trends in modern thought—romanticism, materialism, nihilism, pragmatism, etc. His research and teaching interests include the traditional tension between oratory and philosophy in the liberal arts curriculum; the origins and development of Progressive education in American schools; the cultural fragmentation of a post-modern (post-Christian) era; and the educational role of poetry and literature “that begins in delight and ends in wisdom” (Robert Frost).

While he enjoys the back-and-forth of philosophical discussions in the classroom, Dr. Jackson believes that powerful abstractions are best understood when embodied in timeless works of literature. What’s more, his love of poetry manifests itself in daily classroom recitations and not infrequent memorization assignments of choice lines from “the best that has been thought and said.”
In the tradition of Anselm, Dr. Jackson says “Belief is not antithetical to reason, but complementary. Our task is to charitably explore the beliefs (or anti-beliefs) of our contemporaries, to graciously demonstrate the rational, compelling, beautiful nature of the Gospel.”
In his eleven years at The King’s College, Dr. Jackson has served as a faculty advisor to the student newspaper, the Houses of C.S. Lewis and Thatcher, as well as a chapter of the Intercollegiate Studies Institute. He serves as the moderator for the listserv of the National Association of Scholars. He lives in Orange County, New York with his wife Heidi and five children: Anna, Zachary, Wesley, Gabriel, and Matthew.
