Dr. Douglas Puffert received his doctorate at Stanford University. He has taught at major universities in the United States, England, and Germany, including as Visiting Professor of Economic History at Berlin’s historic Humboldt University. Early in his career he worked three months as a consultant at the World Bank in Washington, and he spent a further six years in Washington with the U.S. International Trade Commission. Puffert has been invited to speak at academic conferences in five European countries, Turkey, and Israel, and in 2011 he was the keynote speaker at a business and engineering conference in Korea. He came to King’s out of an interest to participate in the mission of the PPE program. |

Puffert has published in such leading journals as the Journal of Economic History, Explorations in Economic History, and the National Tax Journal. His articles have been frequently cited, and he has written chapters for eight scholarly books. As a recognized expert in the economic theory of “path dependence,” he has been invited to write articles in several reference works, most notably the New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics. His recent book, which applies the theory of path dependence to the history of railways, was published by a leading academic publisher. According to reviewers, the book will become a “classic case study,” and it is “rigorously analytical, but the analysis never stands in the way of a good story.”
