Academic FAQ'sWhat is The King’s English?
The King’s English
is a comprehensive approach to writing and speaking. The King’s College seeks to
prepare students to influence the key institutions of our society. To do that,
graduates need to be able to write with force and clarity and to engage the
minds and imaginations of readers. They also need to be able to speak eloquently
in all the contexts in which speech matters, from one-on-one conversations to
formal speeches before large audiences and television cameras. We believe that
most American schools do an inadequate job in teaching students to write, and an
even worse job in teaching students to speak. As a result, we have developed a
distinctive program that is part of almost every course in the College and that
teaches students a style of writing and speaking we call imaginative realism.
The written and the spoken word were once the foundational discipline of higher
education everywhere. In effect, we aim to restore that tradition by teaching
students that clear and compelling writing and speech can be rooted in both love
of truth and delight in metaphor.
