During the academic year, the Battles Library is open Monday through Friday,
8:30 AM midnight, Saturday from 10 AM to 10 PM, and Sunday from 2 PM to
midnight. We extend our hours during midterms and finals until 2 AM Sunday
through Thursday. However, during school vacations and the summer months, the
library reduces its evening hours (5:30 PM Monday through Friday) and remains
closed on weekends.
Desk Hours
The Circulation Desk closes 10 minutes before the library closes. You must
complete all circulation transactions before Circulation closing time.
Library Card
The college ID is used as a library card. If you lose your ID card, contact Ed
Gruber at 659-7299 or egruber@tkc.edu.
To obtain a NY Public Library card, see the librarian for a form which you
must take to first the Registrar. After our Registrar completes the form, take
it to the nearest New York Public Library. They will then issue you a card!
Catalog
Our automated catalog includes books, videos and selected educational web sites.
This catalog is available on all networked computers at the ESB. When logging
on, just look for the purple icon labeled "Athena".
Athena offers different ways to find the materials our patrons need. Quick
Search performs general all category searches by author, title or subject. The
Advanced Search feature is used to fine-tune a search. AND, OR and NOT searches
can narrow results by such categories as publisher or call number.
The Web Link Reference Search feature allows patrons to access and search
specific web-based reference resources, such as Britannica Online, the Northern
Light search engine and the Merriam-Webster dictionary. Patrons can move from a
search of the library to a search of these web-based reference resources without
having to re-enter their search terms. The Web button at the top of the screen
is also a gateway to the Internet, allowing patrons to launch their search
without having to exit the library catalog.
Circulation
Privileges
Borrowing privileges are extended only to King's students, faculty and staff.
Browsing privileges are extended to: 1) spouses of King's students and
faculty; 2) alumni and their spouses; 3) members of King's boards and their
spouses; 4) visitors escorted by the Admissions staff; and 5) holders of a
METRO referral card.
Loan Periods
Patrons may borrow books for 2 weeks and videos for 3 days. Recall notices may
reduce all loan periods. Patrons are responsible for returning or renewing
items on time. We do not lend reference materials or magazines for use outside
the library.
Items Not on Shelf
If you do not find the item you are looking for on the shelf, please see a
circulation desk attendant. A staff member will search for an item if our
records do not show it charged out. We will notify you when we either locate
the item or determine that it is missing. You may ask to see if the book is
available through Interlibrary Loan.
If a patron has checked the item out, you can ask that it be "recalled" for
you. We will send a notice of recall to the current borrower and then notify
you when the item has been returned.
Fines & Overdue Materials
Overdue fines for books and videos are as follows: 10 cents per day. Borrowers
are charged an additional $25 for each item lost, stolen or damaged. You may
pay fines in person or by mail.
Delinquencies will result in loss of your borrowing privileges, withholding
of transcripts and degrees, and legal action. For example, once a borrowed
item is 3 weeks overdue, we will revoke your borrowing privileges until the
fine is paid and all items are returned. King's will not issue any transcripts
or diplomas until all outstanding bills are paid. Failure of the borrower to
receive notice from the library does not relieve the borrower of
responsibility for returning items or renewing loans on time.
Renewals
You may renew your loan unless another borrow has requested the item, an
instructor needs it for reserve, or your borrowing privileges have been
blocked. Materials can be renewed for 1 week at a time.
Requesting Holds and Recalls
If a book that you want is currently checked out, you could request that the
book be placed "on hold" for you, or that it be "recalled" for you. Placing a
book "on hold" means that the current borrower cannot renew it. When the book
is returned, you will be notified. In addition to placing a hold, you may
request a recall of the book. Recalling a book will require the current
borrower to return it as soon as possible. If a book is already "on hold", you
may request that your name be added to the hold quest.
An item may be recalled from you if another patron requests it, or if an
instructor needs it for reserve. If you fail to return a recalled item, you
will be charged a fine. After 3 weeks, your borrowing privileges will be
revoked. If you have lost the item, please report it immediately and arrange
to pay for its replacement.
Returns
Returned items may be left on the circulation desk counter.
Visitors
Visitors, who are escorted by a King's student, faculty or staff member may
browse our collection. They are not permitted to remove any materials from the
library.
Losses and Replacements
If a library item charged to you is lost, stolen or damaged, please report
this to the library immediately. If the item is already overdue, reporting the
loss and making arrangements to pay for its replacement will stop further
accumulation of the overdue fine. Patrons will be charged $25 for each lost,
stolen or damaged item. In addition, we will charge you any fine accumulated
before you reported the loss to us.
Blocked Privileges
Circulation privileges will be automatically blocked when recalled items are
not promptly returned or when borrowed items are 3 weeks overdue. Failure of
the borrower to receive notice from the library does not relieve the borrower
of responsibility for returning items or renewing loans on time.
Change of Email Address
Borrowers should report any change in their email address to the library.
Failure of the borrower to receive notice from the library does not relieve
the borrower of responsibility for returning items or renewing loans on time.
Collections
Main Collection
The Rosezella Battles Library was formally dedicated in 1999. The library
features 8 study carrels, 5 reading tables, 2 computer terminals used for
catalog browsing, and 10 computers for general student use. The library houses
over 10,000 books, and subscribes to about 100 periodicals. We have arranged
our books by subject using the Library of Congress classification scheme.
Shelf labels provide further guidance. In addition to the main circulating
collection, the library also houses several special collections.
Reference Books
Reference materials include encyclopedias, handbooks, dictionaries and
atlases. Patrons usually consult these items for specific information. All
reference books have an "REF" above the call number and must not leave the
library.
Reserve Collection
These materials have been placed on reserve by professors for specific
courses. They may only be read in the Library and there is a two hour limit.
They are located on the shelves next to the circulation desk.
Video Collection
The video collection is located on the shelves next to the circulation desk.
Arrangement of the Collection
The library's book collections are arranged using the library of Congress
Classification System, which uses a combination of letters and numbers to
place books together according to their subject matter.

discarded. If desired by donors, the library will provide a gift acknowledgment.
It is the donor's responsibility to assign a dollar value for income tax
purposes.
Instruction
Library instruction is provided to all first year students. Instruction is
offered in formal class sessions (arranged by the classroom faculty member) and
individually. Topics may include the following: Web Directories, Search Engines
and Evaluating Web Information
Interlibrary Loans
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service that obtains materials from other New York
City libraries when they are not available from The King's College library. ILL
privileges are available to students, faculty and staff at King's. This service
is NOT extended to alumni. Although there is a cost for this service, we do not
pass it on to our patrons.
You can use ILL to request most publish material available in paper.
Libraries usually do not lend items that are rare, fragile, reserved for
particular courses or shelved in non-circulating reference collections. Before
filling out an ILL request form, make sure the item is not available at King's.
Check the online catalog. Please fill out the form legibly.
It takes between 2-3 weeks to receive your items. The library staff will
attempt to notify you by telephone or email. Please wait at least a week before
checking on the status of submitted requests. The lending library determines the
loan period and whether the loan can be renewed and for how long. Overdue ILL
items jeopardize our ability to borrow items from other libraries. All ILL uses
will be charged overdue fines when ILL items are not returned on time. Please
return all ILL items promptly to our Circulation Desk.
Mission
The mission of the King's College library is to provide the bibliographic
resources, research services and study environment necessary for the training of
men and women for Christian leadership. The library will develop its
collections, staff, services, and policies to support this task.
Reserves
Faculty members sometimes place books, articles, videotapes and other materials
"on reserve" at the library to maximize access for the students in their
classes. Reserve materials are located on the shelf next to the circulation desk
and are for library use only. The loan period is two hours. You may renew for
another hour if no one else has requested the material.
The reserve service area closes 10 minutes before the library closes. All
reserve items must be returned before closing or overdue fines will be assessed.
An overdue fine of $1.00 per hour (or any part of an hour) will be charged for
late returns. Fines are computed at the time the item is returned. Unpaid
overdue fines may result in the loss of borrowing privileges. Serious
delinquencies will be reported to the faculty member who placed the materials on
reserve.
Photocopies
The library has one photocopier machine.
Restrooms
Restrooms are located across from the vending machines, outside the library.
Telephones
There are no telephones available for student use in the library.
Videos
The loan period for videos is 3 days. The late fines are one dollar per day. An
additional $25 will be charged for videos that are lost, stolen or damaged. Some
videos are on reserve and may only be viewed in the library.
Visitors
The Rosezella Battles Library is intended primarily for the use of students,
faculty and staff of King's. Visitors, escorted by either a student, faculty or
staff member, are welcome. Visitors may freely browse our collection, but are
prohibited from removing any items from the library.
Weeding
Systematic weeding maintains the integrity and currency of the collection.
Weeding eliminates obsolete volumes and allows space for books that will better
support the College objectives and courses of study.
