   Alumni E-Newsletter

April 2006

Dear Alumni,
We hope that you are enjoying the beginnings of Spring. Just as the seasons bring in change, we are making a few changes in the Advancement Office. Jordan Fischer is moving on to Colorado. His wife, Katie, is graduating from King’s this May and they have made plans to return to her home state. Therefore, we have added ElisaBeth Yoder as an advancement associate. She will be taking over many of the responsibilities that Jordan previously handled, including the Alumni Newsletter. We are blessed to have her working with us and are confident that she will continue to help us serve you to the best of our ability!

In this edition, we will recap some of the exciting news in the student body of King's, hear from Dan Preston ’65 about some dear friends of King’s, and finally share about the upcoming Graduation at King’s! Remember to visit us at www.tkc.edu/alumni for bulletin board submission, photo galleries and Homecoming news!

Student Body News
One of the exciting things about spring is that classes are ending, and new leadership is springing forth. At The King's College, student government elections have just been completed. Ted Pantone was elected to be the President and his running mate, Shannon Stott, will be his Vice President. Ted and Shannon are excited for the opportunity to lead and serve the ever increasing student body for the next year. To help them fulfill their responsibilities, Matt Meisinger was elected as the Treasurer and Hope Hodge as the Secretary. These four members complete the Executive Committee of the

Student Government. Please keep them, as well as the class representatives, in your prayers as they begin their era next week.

There have also been some awards presented as the end of the year approaches.  We introduced you to the House Structure in last month’s newsletter. Each year a House is crowned the House Winners based on a series of competitions that last throughout the year.  This year’s winning house is the House of C.S. Lewis!

Faculty of the Year Award

We have also given out the Faculty Award of the Year to Darian Lockett, Assistant Professor of Theology. Darian is in his first year teaching at King’s. He received his B.A. in Medieval History at the University of Kansas, his Masters of Divinity Theology and Greek at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and his Ph.D. in New Testament at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland.

Freshman of the Year Award

One of the unique awards that were created this year is the Freshman of the Year Award. David Lapp of Lancaster, Pennsylvania was honored as the first recipient of this award. His involvement in the House of C.S. Lewis helped it win the House Competition, his 4.0 GPA was an example for the incoming class to follow, plus there were many other areas of involvement in which David left his mark. He said this about his first year experience, "What is truly distinctive about the education I'm receiving here is that I really am acquiring more than just knowledge--I'm gaining wisdom. In my classes, lunches with professors, and late night chats with fellow students, I really do feel as if I’m learning what it means to call Christ 'Lord' in every facet of life.”

Graduation
Graduation is just around the corner. On Saturday May 13th, 2006 our Graduation Ceremonies will begin. The day will include a Baccalaureate Service at 10:00AM, a reception following that, and concluding with Commencement at 2:00PM. Please keep these twenty-one graduates in your prayers as they begin a new chapter in their lives!

Dr. and Mrs. Waldron
By Dan Preston ‘65
Cal and Thelma Waldron worked a combined total of over 70 years at The King's College. Many of you would have remembered Thelma as the secretary in the registrars’ office. During Cal’s thirty eight years of service, he was a teacher, Academic Dean and finally the librarian at The King's College. The Waldrons literally served hundreds of students during these years and made many friends and supported them in missions around the world.

Dr. Waldron (90) went home to glory on the 29th of November, 2005 and his dear wife Thelma (87) joined him on the sixth of February, 2006. They were living in Ossining, NY just about three miles from the Briarcliff Manor campus. Their passion for each other and the college was evident to everyone who met them.

Just three days before Dr. Waldron went Home, I visited him at Phelps Hospital before church on Thanksgiving Day. When I entered his room, he said, "Dan, if God takes me home today, it will be the best Thanksgiving of my life." Thelma had written a note to her dear husband from her bedside in a nursing home rehab unit. As I read that note to Cal, it was one of the most moving things I have ever experienced. It was a love note to her dear Cal of fifty-nine years. When I finished, Cal asked me to do two things for him: please tell Thelma that he loved her, and please take care of her. I promised that I would, which gave him a great peace on his face. He then told me, "Dan, please give the food at our home to those that are in need. Give our clothing to the Salvation Army and sell the contents and give the money to the Gideons so that Bibles can be purchased and distributed and this will count for eternity.”

Dr. Calvin & Thelma Waldron were a gift from God to The King's College and to hundreds of King's alumni. They are great models for us to remember and follow.
