January 2007

Dear Alumni,

Happy New Year! The King's College is excited about the role our alumni are playing and will continue to play in 2007. We have enjoyed those of you who have stopped by for a tour of the campus and look forward to seeing more of you in the near future.

This month’s newsletter contains a story on alumnus Todd Scottson ’91, a look at the new film Amazing Grace and a story about members from the ‘Nifty Fifty.’ Remember to visit our website at www.tkc.edu/advancement/alumni for news and information.

Alumni Spotlight - Todd Scottson ’91

Todd Scottson, a native of New Jersey, entered The King's College in 1986. Some of Todd’s fondest memories while in college were playing on the soccer team and helping form an intramural hockey league. After his first semester of college Todd enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. Reserves and continued to serve during the remainder of his time at TKC.

Upon graduating in 1991 with a degree in History, Todd took a year off to substitute teach before pursuing a masters degree. While in grad school Todd completed his service in the United States Marine Corp., and after receiving his M.Ed from East Strousburg University he

began working for the New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services.

After the events of September 11, 2001 Todd was deeply moved and wanted to contribute to America in a tangible way. He signed up with the Army Reserves which had openings for Military Police. In 2004 Todd received the official order to report for Operation Iraqi Freedom III. During the time before his deployment Todd drew closer to God. He realized all he could do was leave his one-year tour in Iraq in God’s hands and trust in Him. While training in preparation for Iraq, Todd was chosen by the commander of the company to become a personal bodyguard for General Thomas Sullivan, who was a fellow believer in Christ. God protected Todd physically and mentally through many tough situations and truly blessed and watched over him while he served in Iraq.

Coming back to the United States was an adjustment, but after a period of rest Todd returned to his job at the NJ Division of Youth and Family Services where he was promoted to supervisor - investigating child abuse and neglect with the main goal of keeping families together. He completed his services with the United States Army Reserves in March 2006.

Amazing Grace Comes to The King's College
On January 18th The King's College partnered with Walden Media to present students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends with a pre-screening of Amazing Grace, a movie about the life of William Wilberforce, produced by Ken Wales.

Amazing Grace, a story about the great Christian reformer, is directed by Michael Apted and stars Ioan Gruffudd and Albert Finney. While visiting the The King's College Mr. Wales spoke with a group of students about the power of film in changing the culture. He also spoke about the technical aspects of breaking into the film industry and answered questions from students who are interested in film as a career.

Wales has produced numerous films during his 15 year association with director Blake Edwards, including The Tamarind Seed and Wild Rovers and associate/line-produced many films including Darling Lili, starring Julie Andrews and Rock Hudson. In TV, Wales co-produced the Emmy and Golden Globe winner, John Steinbeck’s East of Eden. He was also the executive producer on Christy.
A Visit with the ‘Nifty Class of Fifty’
On January 12th Rick Millham, Vice President of the Alumni Association and Kathy Leedy, Assistant Vice President for Development, had the privilege of attending a lunch organized by Peggy Craven, Class of ’50. Also in attendance were 12 couples from the ‘nifty class of fifty’. The lunch took place outside of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Rick updated the group on the steps The King's College is taking to serve alumni. He also emphasized the fact that he believes there is tremendous synergy between the vision of The King’s College today and that of The King’s College as it existed in 1950. He stated both were concerned with educating students to make a difference in our world for Christ.

Kathy informed them of broader College issues and then took questions from the group. On her return to the college she was able to inform President Oakes that this amazing group of individuals are still meeting and keeping Percy Crawford’s voice alive.

It is obvious this group of alumni continues to wholeheartedly support The King's College. It is no surprise they have a sincere desire to see the students at The King’s College grow spiritually and develop in their relationships with Christ. What a wonderful example for current and future King’s graduates to see there are alumni dedicated to their alma mater and one another even after fifty years has past.

The Social Committee, made up of two representatives from each class, has the distinct duty of providing an adequate social program for the school year. Under the direction of Mrs. Elizabeth Edwards, this year’s program included two formals – The Fall Formal in November, and February Fantasy. Supplementing these highlights were the Christmas smorgasbord and weekend affairs from swimming and skating to lounge parties, which kept the students active social throughout the year.
