Alumni E-Newsletter
|
March 2006 |
|
|
Dear Alumni,
We are excited to hear that so many of you are
enjoying this monthly e-newsletter. We appreciate
your honest feedback, efforts in updating your
information, and the many who have submitted
comments to the bulletin board. Please continue to
check-in on the bulletin board as someone might be
looking for you. Also, we have added a new feature
that allows you to see what The King's College
Campus looks like. It is called our ‘Campus Tour’.
You can find it under the ‘Photo Gallery’ which is
under the title ‘What’s the Latest’ on the alumni
home page -
www.tkc.edu/alumni.
This edition will address what King's has to do with
the Massachusetts State House, King's Mission Trips,
and the unique King's House Structure.

A
Championship Reunion
|
|
By: Tricia Gleason ‘86

|
|
Alumni from King's share some
great memories. Those of us from the '80's can
surely remember filling in daily chapel cards for
attendance. What about running up the stairs all the
way to 7th Heaven? Ever get thrown in the pond or
have a water balloon dropped on you from floors
above while trying to get to the back entrance of
Main? Didn't you eat enough of those glazed
doughnuts at Continental Breakfast?
Not only do we have our fond memories, we all have
special mementos from our King's years, too. The guys
from 5th and 6th floor Main Men are no exception.
After winning the intramural football championship
in 1985, word is that they have held on to the
winning trophy and have a tradition of passing it
around from teammate to teammate. Apparently the
trophy spends a year or more at a teammate's home
and then the honor of housing it goes on to another
guy.

It doesn't always stay at
home. Sometimes it gets more auspicious display.
This year for example, it will actually spend time
in the Massachusetts State House office of Rep.
Vinny de Macedo. Jonathan Steele's commentary help
bring back the moments.
“The King's College 1985
Intramural Football championship trophy changed
hands yet again on February 6, [2006]. The trophy
had resided in the homes of 1985-86 King's intramural
director Dave Cura '86, Bob "Mio" Sheldon, and
Jonathan Steele over the years before being
presented to State Representative Vinny de Macedo
(R-Massachusetts) of the 1st Plymouth District. The
trophy commemorates a stunning 12-6 championship
game between the first place 3rd Floor and the
eventual champion 56ers [5th and 6th floor] in which
quarterback Sheldon connected with de Macedo for two
touchdown passes." |

King's Missions |
|
 |
The King's College encourages
each of its students to seriously consider serving on
a short-term mission’s trip during their tenure at
King’s. We have had the opportunity to send students
and staff to China, Ethiopia, Peru, Turkey, Grenada,
and even nationally to Florida. For the past two years
over Spring Break, our students have gone to London to
minister during their time off from classes. This
summer, we have a group going to Albania, headed up by
one of our Albanian students. As you can all imagine,
each trip has impacted the lives of each individual in
ways that they could never have been prepared. We are
excited to continue to fulfill the Great Commission
here in NYC as well as internationally!

House System
|
|
|
The King's House System was
launched during the 2004-05 school year. We found
there were several unique challenges with being
located in New York City; one of them is creating
community among our student body. As a result, these
houses were created by adapting the best components
of two models of student housing: the
fraternity/sorority model and the Ivy League house
model. The King's House System takes the best of both
models and merges these strengths into one, creating
the unique dimensions of social, spiritual and
academia life. |

House of Barton |
Each
incoming freshman or transfer student is assigned to
a House. We have nine Houses, four male houses and
five female; all named after influential leaders
that helped shape our world. The nine Houses are:
Susan B. Anthony, Clara Barton, Sojourner Truth,
Margaret Thatcher, Elizabeth I, Winston Churchill,
C.S. Lewis, Ronald Reagan, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
The House Structure contains a small group bible
study, many social opportunities, plus an academic
focus that really unites the houses as a family.
However, one of the unique facets is the competition
against the |
|
other houses. Each house
competes in an array of activities that range from a
Great Race throughout NYC, to a basketball tournament,
to an essay contest, and even an overall GPA of the
house. The winning house is rewarded for their efforts.
Last year, the House of Barton won the year-long
competition and was awarded a cash price which they used
to travel to Boston for the weekend.
Each house is structured with a
Staff/Faculty Advisor, and five student-led positions: a
President, a Vicar (spiritual development), a Helmsmen
(works with new members), a Chamberlain (standards and
community), and a Scholar (academic development &
learning). They are a huge success, and one of the
highlights to everyone’s experience at King’s! |
