Dear Alumni,

We are already halfway through September, and that means the campus is buzzing with classes, organization meetings, and house events. It also means that our annual Homecoming celebration is coming at the end of the month, and we’d love to have you join us! You can buy tickets to Homecoming here.

Also, if you are interested in staying abreast of what is going on with students, faculty, and events at The King’s College, I would encourage you to drop by and “Like” our Facebook page, or follow us on Twitter. Our social media services are updated daily with faculty commentaries, student news stories, photos, and videos to help keep you in the loop.

God is doing incredible works in and through King’s, but that often brings unique challenges. As we move deeper into the semester, please keep the students, faculty, and administration of the College in your prayers.

I look forward to meeting many of you at Homecoming! Until then, take a look at some of this month’s headlines at King’s.

Warm Regards,

2011-2012 a Big Year for King’s Athletics

The 2011-2012 academic year marks another year of expansion for The King's College Athletic Department. The mission of our program is to serve student interest in competitive and recreational sports while fostering student leadership, dedication and discipline.

This year, new members on the administrative team include Amanda Sanderson, Assistant to the Athletic Director, and Andrew Van Cleave, Sports Information Director. Interning this semester with the Athletics Program will be Joe Potts, Asst. Sports Information Director.

We are also excited to report a new committee at The King's College. The Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will help promote communication between athletics, administration, students, and faculty. With the recent growth in the athletic department comes a need to coordinate the larger volume of information. The committee, consisting of Andrew Van Cleave, Joe Potts, Abigail Murray (volleybal), Liz Ferguson (women's basketball), Grant Olson (baseball), Amanda Sanderson (women's soccer), and Austin Free (men's soccer), will help generate student-athlete voice within the athletics program. Besides inter-sport communication, the SAAC at TKC will work to organize community outreach programs for the athletes and generate a positive student-athlete image on campus.

By involving current students as well as incoming freshman in sports, the Athletic Department remains a vital part of The King's College mission to develop students who will influence their work community. Sports reveal character and bring strengths as well as flaws to the surface to be processed and refined. The dedication acquired in athletics is also valuable outside of sports, giving student athletes a competitive edge in the classroom.

In order to communicate schedules, scores and results, The King's College Athletic Department now uses Twitter and Facebook. You can connect by following each of the links.

Recent Graduate Joins Salem Media Representatives

156982_10150101525995412_548010411_7795575_6937129_n.jpgDuring her time at The King’s College, Holly Hall was a driven student who maintained excellent grades, an active presence in her house, and internships. Through her relationships with business professors at King’s like Dawn Fotopulos, Holly realized that her natural skills and interests lie in marketing, public relations, and advertising. After four years of experience and a B.A. in Business Management, Holly recently moved on to work in her field of interest. She was recently hired as an Account Executive for Salem Media Representatives, a division of Salem Communications, and is already seeing her King’s education at work.

Holly’s work involves creating integrated marketing campaigns for clients using radio, digital, print, online, and event marketing mediums. Holly is excited for the experience that her job is giving her, but is also excited to work for an organization that collaborates with so many other Christian organizations. “Salem's Christian music stations encourage faith and family,” she said, “so I have the honor of working with clients who have a product or service that can benefit listeners who align with those values.”

Originally from Nashville, TN, Holly found her passion for business early on. She worked for two small family owned businesses, which she said “gave me two different perspectives in business management and helped me realize my interest in business.” During her time at King’s, Holly established relationships with business professors, refined her skills, and sought out internship opportunities. In March of 2011, just a few months after graduating in the winter, Holly was connected to Salem through a school mate at King’s. “I read the job description and it felt like it was written for me, so I moved to Dallas to begin my career in integrated marketing two months later.”

Holly’s education at King’s continues to play a role in her work today. Holly said that her education gave her the ability to understand a broad range of organizations, including non-profits, think tanks, and law firms. “Although I am always humbled by how much more I have to learn in some fields,” she said, “I am able to understand the foundational principles to their organizations, which helps build trust and rapport within our working relationship.”

After four years at King’s, Holly has advice for students pursuing business. “Find a mentor who models the person you would like to be in ten years, and not just career-wise. Try to land internships in industries that interest you, and remember that it is ok if you do not know exactly what you want to pursue. You have to start somewhere!”

In the future, Holly hopes to continue her career in marketing and advertising and start her own company one day. If you’d like to find out more about Holly, her experience at King’s, or her position at Salem, she can be reached at hhall@salemreps.com.

“Married Larry Blakeman ('79) Aug. 1980. I'm a stay-at-home mom of our boy/girl twins who just turned 11 and will start middle school next month (scary thought at our age!). Larry is CIO of MetLife's US business, and we live in Basking Ridge, NJ. Would love to hear from former classmates & those at TKC from '80-'87 (when I was on staff).”

“I still remember very clearly the 1973 soccer season. NBC went to the first OFFICIAL NCCAA tournament, along with Grace College (Winona Lake, IN); Covenant College (TN); and Messiah College (PA). We actually came away the winners...after two overtime, 1-0 games! It's nice to visit the NCCAA website and see Northeastern's name at the top of that list of winners. Fun memories! We should make sure the NCCAA championship banner is posted somewhere at Kings!”
