Clara Limback ('12) | Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (King’s Valedictorian)
Home State: Pennsylvania
Current Residence: Falls Church, Virginia
Current Emploryer: Program Associate at The Charles Koch Foundation
Brief description of your current responsibilities: I assist with the Charles Koch Foundation’s student engagement initiatives. One of the Foundation’s goals is to provide undergraduate students with information on jobs, internships, and seminars that promote economic freedom. Some of my responsibilities include mass email sends, communicating with students and professors, and creating new ways for professors and students to get connected to opportunities that advance economic freedom.
Best part of job: In addition to working full-time, I am part of the Koch Associate Program. This is a yearlong professional development program in which one day of my week is spent in workshops, reading discussions, trainings, and group projects. The best part of my job is that I have the opportunity to continue learning post-graduation and to grow professionally.
How has King’s education prepared you for this role? The King’s education taught me how to think critically. It also laid the groundwork for how I view the role of government in society, something that relates to the Koch Foundation’s mission. My King’s economics classes, American Political Thought and Practice, and Public Policy were especially influential in laying this groundwork.
What professional recommendation do you have for current King’s students? I would encourage current King’s students to do two things. First, I would encourage them to take their schoolwork seriously and to treat it like a fulltime job. One of the best ways to prepare yourself for post-graduation is to work diligently and smartly in your courses. Second, I would recommend they get involved in House leadership. Being in House leadership led me to the position I am currently in, as it provided opportunities for me to be challenged and to grow personally and professionally.
Favorite Books: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, The Help by Kathryn Stockett, Democracy in America by Alexis de Tocqueville
Surprising fact: One of my favorite hobbies is skeet shooting
