Biography Released about Founder Percy Crawford

NEW YORK, January 10, 2011—Percy Crawford is known as a top evangelist of the mid-20th century, and was one of the first to use the burgeoning medium of television as a ministry tool. Known for his vibrant preaching style and his reputation for using vocal music, Dr. Crawford used this momentum to start The King’s College in 1939.

Dr. Crawford’s legacy in evangelical history, however, has been largely unwritten. In 2010, one of his sons attempted to rectify that. The result is “A Thirst for Souls: The Life of Evangelist Percy B. Crawford (1902-1960).” The author, Dan Crawford, attended The King’s College for two years, and has since received his doctorate in philosophy and teaches at the University of Nebraska—Lincoln.

“I decided to write the book mainly because I felt that Percy Crawford had made an important contribution to the fundamentalist/evangelical tradition in America that had not been sufficiently recognized by historians,” Dan Crawford said. “I wanted to secure my father's place in the history of religion in America.”

The biography chronicles Percy Crawford’s ministry in all of its various facets—from radio to higher education—and shows how the evangelist maintained his fundamental Christian beliefs. It also describes the various attacks on those beliefs and why he so steadfastly held to them.

Two chapters on The King’s College may be of particular note to friends and alumni. Dan Crawford said, “I think King's graduates and friends would want to know about the history of the college and my father's vision for it; the relation of the college to Percy's evangelistic organization, The Young People's Church of the Air, and to his radio and television ministries; the challenges it faced in the early years when its very survival was at stake; the painstaking journey it has taken in fulfilling Percy's vision of training young men and women for Christian service.”

The biography is available from Amazon.

The King’s College is located in the Empire State Building in New York City.
