Student Story: Jeremy Cerone

|
Before the spring 2011 semester was over, I was working remotely for a businessman who was running for the Republican nomination in the New Jersey State Assembly. Shortly after arriving home for the summer, I was promoted to Campaign Manager. In that role, I developed the campaign message and strategy and organized grassroots outreach, fundraising efforts, advertisement distribution, scheduling, phone banking, website development, media relations, and getting voters to the polls. I applied principles I learned in Persuasive Writing, American Political Thought and Practice, Statistics, The King’s Debate Society, and other facets of my King’s education.

Although we lost in a tough primary battle, it was a tremendous experience, especially since most college students getting started in politics do grunt work like putting signs in the ground while I had the opportunity to direct volunteers and to make decisions about how to use resources. After the primary, I encouraged our campaign to join forces with several of our main supporters, including contacts in the Tea Party movement, to reorganize and form a political action committee to promote fiscally conservative candidates and policies, which is what I did the rest of the summer as Senior Strategic Advisor.

Now that I’m back at school, I’m starting a chapter of the College Republicans, toward providing a more practical avenue for political involvement for students. I also serve as the Vice President of The King’s Debate Society as well as a Teaching Assistant for Dr. David Corbin. My goal for the long term is to become a political consultant and to serve the Christian conservatives of my generation by orchestrating victories for us on the political battlefield in support of our values.
