Just a few days ago, I was officially promoted to the position of Executive Recruiter at a headhunting firm called Alliance Consulting. Alliance consulting specializes in strategically relocating some of the most productive people on Wall Street. We focus on Fixed Income executives- Managing Directors, VPs, Heads, etc.

In December of 2009, I was at a New Years Eve party in Tampa where, over the phone, I was introduced to Paul Sorbera, the president and CEO of the firm. Paul encouraged me to contact him once I was back in the City to schedule an interview for an intern position.

In January, I had the interview and got the job on the spot being offered flexible hours at $12/hr. I began working a week later. My first project was to entirely reorganize and alphabetize a filing cabinet, which took me over a week. I did a good job and after a few more weeks of grunt-work, I was assigned to do research on the Bloomberg Terminal. My job was then to locate position-specific experts in fixed income departments at major banks, boutiques and hedge funds, gathering phone numbers, email addresses, and their specific products and positions (i.e. High Yield Sales, or Distressed Bond Trading). I would then relay that info to the recruiters who then developed relationships with the candidates.

I stayed in NYC one summer in order to see what working at the firm full time was like. To be honest, it was quite miserable as I saw no promotion, no raise and no added responsibility. However, in May of 2011, I sat down with my boss to discuss my summer plans. He requested that I stay in NYC again so that I could begin working as a recruiter. Plans had already been made to go home for the summer, so I turned down the offer but asked if it would still stand in the fall. He said, “Absolutely. It’s here for whenever you want it.” I went home for the summer and interned with a stock-broker at Morgan Stanley, hoping the experience would better qualify me to recruit at Alliance. Apart from attaining further knowledge of the Market, I also gained a lot more confidence in talking about financial instruments.

In August, I met up with my boss and asked if he still wanted to get me on the phones. He said the firm had taken a hit over the summer and desperately needed my tenacity and ambition to be directed towards making phone calls and recruiting candidates. He promoted me from research intern to executive recruiter, and is currently constructing a new compensation plan that will include various bonuses based on how much information I can attain I was also asked to locate a new intern to fill my old position and assist me and the other recruiters with research and administrative responsibilities. I will surely select a brother from the House of Reagan.
