King's Graduate Publishes in the Wall St. Journal

NEW YORK, April 19, 2012—Christopher White, a recent graduate of the King’s Politics, Philosophy & Economics degree recently proved the value of the King’s education when he co-published an article in the Wall Street Journal with Anne Hendershott, Distinguished Visiting Professor of Urban Studies at King’s.

In "Traditional Catholicism is Winning," White and Hendershott argue that the traditional Roman Catholic Church is experiencing resurgence. The writers point to the 467 new priestly ordinations last year in the U.S., and the large jump in ordinations in areas not typically seen as “Catholic strongholds.”

What explains the jump in ordinations? White and Hendershott argue that the young generation in America is increasingly attracted to “the philosophy, the art, the literature and the theology that make Catholicism countercultural.” This falls in contrast to “boomer” priests and scholars who call for the church to “change Catholic teachings on reproductive rights, same-sex marriage and women's ordination.”

In short, the same obedience to Sacred Tradition that progressives grumble about is what is bringing new members to the church and new priests into the priesthood.

White says that his King’s education, with its heavy emphasis on rigorous writing and editing, helped him to craft the article. White said, “my rhetoric course with Dr. Carle has proven indispensable in improving my writing skills. Professors Puffert and Tubbs demand that students develop sharp critical thinking abilities and analytical skills, which are essential to a project like this.”

White and Hendershott began collaborating on the project in the fall of 2011. The article, however, is just the beginning of the discussion. The two are coauthoring a book called “Beyond the Catholic Culture Wars,” which could be published as early as the end of 2012.
