San Francisco Archbishop Defends Traditional Marriage While Reaching Out to Gay Community

Should the gay community in San Francisco be worried about the arrival of Salvatore Cordileone, the new Catholic Archbishop of San Francisco? Professor Anne Hendershott and King’s alumnus Chris White write in USA Today that although Archbishop Cordileone was one of the leading proponents of Proposition 8, which defined marriage as between a man and a woman, the Archbishop is not the enemy of the gay community.

In "Gays Shouldn’t Fear New SF Catholic Bishop," Hendershott and White argue that the same fears were voiced when William Levada, a recent predecessor of Cordileone, was appointed Archbishop of San Francisco. Those fears, the authors argue, were unfounded. Hendershott and White point out that Archbishop Levada was,

“supportive of those within the Catholic community that struggle with same sex attraction — encouraging all Catholics to be faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church requiring that homosexual persons be treated with ‘respect, compassion and sensitivity.’ And, although Archbishop Levada later became the principal editor of the Catechism of the Catholic Church which reinforced Catholic teachings on what the Church views as the ‘disordered nature of homosexual acts,’ he is fondly remembered in San Francisco as one who treated gay men and lesbian women with respect, while never compromising church teaching.”

Citizens of San Francisco can expect the same from Archbishop Cordileone. Hendershott and White write that Cordileone and Levada share much in common. Neither men were “single issue” bishops, and Cordileone has focused on “pro-life issues, abolishing the death penalty, and supporting immigrants in previous leadership roles.”
