NEW YORK, February 21, 2013—After completing a rigorous application process, King’s junior Michael Medeiros was selected as a Truman Scholarship national finalist. Past winners of this prestigious national award include Janet Napolitano, George Stephanopoulos, and Susan Rice.

The Truman Scholarship offers substantial scholarships and leadership training to exceptional students who are committed to careers in the public service. Between 600 and 700 students apply for the annual scholarship. Of those, about 175 are chosen as finalists, and up to 60 chosen from that group to win the scholarship.

The scholarship is highly selective and rewards the brightest, most ambitious students. Medeiros fits both of these descriptions. During his sophomore year, Professor Matthew Parks (TKC faculty advisor for the scholarship) recalled his first impression of Medeiros saying, “Knowing his academic reputation, I looked forward to having him in class until he sent me a note indicating that he would have to withdraw because he had secured a full-time internship at the UN. Only later did I realize how remarkable this was: that he had overcome long-standing institutional policy and practice to secure a top internship as an undergraduate.”

Medeiros worked throughout the fall semester on an application that includes general background information, eight essays, and a policy proposal. A completed application also includes a letter supporting the candidacy from the faculty representative and three letters of recommendation - one demonstrating academic promise, one demonstrating leadership ability, and one demonstrating a commitment to public service.

Medeiros said he hopes to to help deepen US-European relations in support of new First World-Third World partnerships.

“Mike has approached this process with the same energy, ability, and effort that made him a strong nominee,” said Parks. “He is a bright and gifted leader who gets results by turning the ideal into the real. The steps before him are even more challenging and ambitious, but the past and present auger well for the future.”

Medeiros said that his King’s education played an important role in his coming this far. “My time at King's has significantly improved my writing and rhetoric skills,” he said. Additionally, he said, “the opportunities to network and gain internships in the city have been invaluable.”

On March 1st, Medeiros will travel to Boston to be interviewed by the Regional Review Panels. Truman Scholars will be announced April 29th, 2013.
