Eliza Ohman works to launch performance career

Thousands of young, talented performers move to New York City every year to pursue their passion. A successful career, especially in New York City, is every artist’s dream. But can a young adult balance a professional career, college education, part-time work, and student leadership at the same time? Eliza Ohman, a King’s senior studying Media, Culture, and the Arts (MCA), is pursuing her dream in performance and proving that education, work, and leadership can be achieved simultaneously.

Like many King’s students, Eliza spent her first few years at King’s devoting herself to course-work, student leadership, and enjoying New York City. This year is different.

At the beginning of the Spring semester, Eliza enrolled in Broadway Dance Center's Professional Semester Program which is geared toward equipping aspiring performers. The program schedule is rigorous. Each week, Eliza takes 12 dance classes, one acting class, one voice class, one master class with a prominent choreographer/director/producer, and one seminar discussing the business side of the dance industry. In addition, she participates in two to three rehearsals each week to prepare for a Spring Performance. “The entire program works out to be about 35-40 hours a week,” Eliza said, “but I'm incredibly grateful because it's transferring into King's as 9 credits.”

Eliza is planning to pursue a career in dance, and the program at Broadway Dance Center has already offered great professional opportunities. “Within the first two weeks of the program,” she said, “I'd already given my resume to two Tony award winning choreographers and 1 talent agency, all upon their request.” Since then, she has signed as a dancer with Clear Talent Group, a bi-coastal talent agency, and booked a role in an upcoming Macy’s industrial commercial.

All of her work has amounted to a very busy semester. On top of her busy artistic schedule, Eliza takes two rigorous courses at King’s, holds a job at Student Services, and serves as President of The House of Clara Barton. But, Eliza says, she has made it work in part because of the support of King’s faculty. “Dr. Bleattler and Sue Ho were a fantastic help as I pursued this program and helped me receive as much credit as possible,” she said. “It's great to attend a college where the staff and faculty are continually ‘on your side.’”
