TKC Athletic Director to Coach Men’s Rugby Team at International Tournament in London
Sean Horan Takes Team to Compete in World Club Sevens, Anticipates Rugby’s Return to the Olympics in Rio 2016
Prospective students of The King’s College know that we offer a unique experience amongst colleges. Students who arrive on campus realize quickly, however, that being a King’s student is not without parallels to the "typical" college life. In place of a bucolic campus – with its football stadium and athletics program, its verdant quad, and its local college town – King’s students enjoy four years in a dynamic urban setting with access to Madison Square Garden, Central Park, and many local coffee shops with quiet study atmospheres. Students also realize that The King's College offers exciting ways to get involved in athletics while they enjoy college life in New York City.
Sean Horan, Athletic Director at The King’s College, has spent several years developing a robust athletics program, and his most recent endeavor will take him to Twickenham Stadium in London as he makes international connections for TKC Athletics. Mr. Horan came to King’s after serving as the Head Coach of the Columbia University Rugby Football Club, a premier program in the New York region and the Ivy League.
Since his arrival at King’s, Mr. Horan has built TKC Athletics to include intercollegiate offerings in men’s baseball, basketball, and soccer and women’s basketball, soccer, and volleyball through the NCCAA and the USCAA. King’s students also participate in club, intramural, and recreational sports such as golf, cross country, fencing, cheer, ultimate frisbee, cycling, skiing/snowboarding, and swimming.
This summer, with his background in coaching men’s rugby, Mr. Horan will build off of his momentum with TKC Athletics to take a team to London for competition in the inaugural World Club Sevens tournament in anticipation of rugby’s return to the Olympics in Rio’s 2016 summer games.
"This is a tremendous honor for the Northeast Olympic Development Academy in representing USA Rugby and New York in this inaugural event at the home of rugby," Mr. Horan said. His team, the New York City Sevens, will compete in the event in London on August 17 and 18 against clubs from South Africa, Russia, New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, and beyond.
Several of the players on Mr. Horan’s New York City Sevens team will be contracted players with the US men’s national rugby team. Leading sports broadcasters in Australia, Great Britain, and beyond will provide live coverage of the tournament.
