Bret Schundler introduced as COO

NEW YORK, January 20, 2009—The King’s College announced that Bret Schundler will become the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the college effective January 20.

In 1992, Schundler became the mayor of Jersey City, New Jersey, one of the biggest cities in America. Under his management the city saw unprecedented growth and prosperity. According to a Harvard University study, during Schundler’s tenure Jersey City was first among the nation’s 100 biggest cities for job growth and poverty reduction. His success prompted him to run for New Jersey governor and he received his party’s nomination in 2001. The campaigns provided Schundler with a national platform to discuss important policy issues, and he became one of the leading voices for charter school legislation.

As the National President of Americans for School Choice, Schundler won a United States Federal Court of Appeals decision (ACLU v. Schundler) written by now United States Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito. The decision protects religious expression against government discrimination. In recognition of his defense of religious freedom, he won the prestigious Canterbury Medal for Religious Liberty.

Before entering politics Schundler accrued extensive experience in the financial sector. In the late 80s he built a successful career on Wall Street working for Salomon Brothers and C.J. Lawrence, now a part of Deutsche Bank. At Salomon he dealt with institutional fixed income sales and worked in institutional equity research sales at C.J. Lawrence.

Schundler is no stranger to King’s. From 2006-2008 he taught rhetoric and started The Policy Center, an intensive program that trained students as subject matter experts in a variety of policy issues. He has also donated his time as a fundraiser, going to different events across the country and speaking about the value of a King’s education. In the summer of 2008 he accompanied a group of King’s students and professors to Albania to discuss the value of free markets and Jesus Christ.

Schundler graduated Cum Laude from Harvard in 1981. He and his wife Lynn live in Jersey City along with their daughter, Shaylin (16), and son, Hans Otto III (10).

The King’s College—New York City is a Christian liberal arts college located in the Empire State Building.
