King's Professor a Leading Voice in Black Community

Dr. Anthony Bradley publishes on social, political, and economic justice

NEW YORK, February 28, 2012 – Dr. Anthony Bradley, Associate Professor of Theology and Ethics, continues to create dialogue in the American black community on issues ranging from theology and politics to culture and economic justice. In January, he published Keep Your Head Up: America's New Black Christian Leaders, Social Consciousness, and the Cosby Conversation and is releasing another on March 1st entitled The Political Economy of Liberation: Thomas Sowell and James Cone on the Black Experience.

The books come on the heels of the 2010 publication of Dr. Bradley's Liberating Black Theology: The Bible and the Black Experience in America and the 2011 release of Black and Tired.

Keep Your Head Up is a compilation of essays edited by Dr. Bradley that discuss issues facing the black community, including the black family, hip-hop, masculinity, and the prosperity gospel. To accomplish this, he brings together a team of pastors, scholars, and leaders in the black community.

In early February, Dr. Bradley flew out to Jackson, MS to launch the book in the oldest black church in Jackson, and the second oldest black church in Mississippi. Attending the event were civil-rights figures, including James Meredith, the first African-American to graduate from the University of Mississippi. At the event, Dr. Bradley told the Clarion Ledger that "the black church is perfectly positioned to regain her moral influence in shaping the virtues and morale of black communities for the common good."

Adam Thomason, Lead Teaching Pastor at Damascus Road in Flint, MI, said, “There has been an epidemic among African-Americans for many generations. I am excited that this book highlights the reality of the epidemic from a Christ-centered paradigm, focusing on him and not the false American dream of ‘pulling yourself up by your bootstraps.’ I pray this book alarms the redeemed to the reality of this call."

Dr. Bradley's second release of 2012, The Political Economy of Liberation: Thomas Sowell and James Cone on the Black Experience, is a scholarly work on political economy and theology that is focused on Thomas Sowell. In it, Bradley brings Cone and Sowell into dialogue with one another in order to create a long-term vision for the economic sustainability of the black community.

Dr. Walter Williams, John M. Olin Distinguished Professor of Economics at George Mason University, endorsed the book, saying, “Generally people share the common goal of wanting greater well-being for our fellow man. Despite the fact of that common goal, more often than not, we see people grouped into contentious factions ... Anthony B. Bradley does a yeoman's job in explaining how this conflict occurs in The Political Economy of Liberation."
