Commercial hip-hop and rap in the United States has developed a reputation for promoting "narcissism, consumerism, and misogyny," says Professor of Theology and Ethics Anthony Bradley. And so it is increasingly rare to find hip-hop artists like Mr. J. Medeiros ("Mr. J"), who raps to promote wisdom and virtue.
In "Hip-Hop With a Conscience," Dr. Bradley sits down with Mr. J for an interview. The conversation focuses primarily on Mr. J's motivations for taking the risk of promoting positive messages, or devoting time to talking about his parents.
When asked about why he chooses to write lyrics that are less lucrative in today's market, Mr. J responded, saying:
"...If you write music centered on misogynistic material, for example, you will have more “success” I am sure. However, if you’re trying to write music in an attempt to connect to some truth within yourself or in the world, it requires a certain type of honesty and introspection that has no time to worry whether or not it will “sell.” If I have any values at all, I’m sure it has something to do with faith, family, friends, great song writers, and some awesome books!"
