King’s Launches Distinguished
Visitor Series
Last month The King's College
kicked off its new Distinguished
Visitor Series with a bang. In
the space of three weeks, King's
students have heard from a U.S.
Senator, a prominent member of
British Parliament, a Fox News
correspondent, an executive at
the Heritage Foundation, and
several others. Before the end
of the academic year, 29 guests
will come to TKC's campus in the
Empire State Building to speak
on topics related to the
College's mission to "prepare
students for careers in which
they help to shape and
eventually to lead strategic
public and private
institutions."
King's Provost Marvin Olasky,
editor-in-chief of WORLD
magazine, helped design the
program. "The King's College is
becoming a place where Christian
leaders and others come to
explore new concepts," he said.
"The 2009-10 Distinguished
Visitor Series uses our great
location to expose our students
to great ideas."
A typical session with a
distinguished visitor consists
of Provost Olasky conducting a
30-minute interview with the
guest, followed by an open
question and answer period
during which students can
interact directly with the
speaker. On September 14th, our
guest was Jim DeMint, the junior
U.S. Senator from South
Carolina. For two years in a
row, Senator DeMint has been
ranked the most conservative
member of the Senate by
National Journal. He is
recently the author of Saving
Freedom: We Can Stop America's
Slide into Socialism,
published by Fidelis Books. At
the interview’s conclusion, a
student asked why the
conservative principle of
individual liberty should not
extend to homosexual couples
seeking to marry and pregnant
women seeking abortions. Such
probing questions show how
King’s students are using the
interviews as a chance to
integrate their learning in the
classroom with real-world
problems.
The Distinguished Visitor Series
is open to the public. In the
months ahead, visits are planned
by Richard Dawkins, Tim Keller,
Arthur Brooks, and many more.
