Frequently Asked Questions for Herald Towers and The Vogue

1. What is Residence Life?
  The mission of Residence Life at The King’s College is to provide superior living environments and develop communities of accountability where students love, respect, and challenge one another.
   
2. What are Chamberlains?
  Chamberlains are students who serve in House leadership. They are responsible for promoting safe and healthy living environments in residential housing, fostering a community of accountability among residents, and providing periodic on-call emergency assistance.
   
3. What are Housing Assistants?
  Housing Assistants are students who are hired by Student Life staff to help with the daily administration of the Housing locations. They conduct monthly room checks, collect paperwork (Over-night Guest Request Forms, Key Replacement Forms, etc.), and provide periodic on-call emergency assistance.
   
4. How do Houses factor into my Residence Life experience?
  Houses serve as a primary means for building community at King’s. Please refer to the House System section of our website to learn more.
   
5. Does a Student Life staff member live in campus housing?
A full-time Student Development staff member lives in each King’s College residence. Designated individuals are on call 24-hours a day to provide emergency assistance.
 
6. Where are the Herald Towers and The Vogue?
The Herald Towers (50 West 34th Street) and The Vogue (990 6th Avenue) are located in Midtown Manhattan. Both apartment buildings are approximately a 5-10 minute walk from the Empire State Building.

8. How safe is the Midtown neighborhood?
While there is an element of risk in any city, our locations are well-lit and highly populated with low crime rates. We advise students to take standard safety precautions and call a 24-hour school emergency number for assistance at any time.
 
9. Do the buildings have an Emergency Action Plan?
  Yes, both apartment buildings have emergency action plans. The College Emergency Action Plan is also available on our website.
   
10. How long is the travel time between the Herald Tower’s/Vogue and 52 Broadway?
   
   
11. Is there a gym/health club nearby?
  Health club memberships are offered to full-time students on a first-come, first-serve basis at a reduced student rate.
   
12. What is the availability and cost of laundry facilities?
  Laundry facilities are available in student housing and cost approximately $5.25 for a combined wash and dry. Machines are “high-efficiency” (HE), so HE detergent is recommended.
   
13. What TV/cable amenities are offered in King’s apartments?
  All apartments receive a limited cable package through Time Warner including channels such as TBS, PIX, NY1, ABC, CBS, NBC, and Food Network.
   
14. Can a student purchase additional TV/cable options?
  No. The IT Department handles all cable/internet matters, including account maintenance and technical support. Purchasing additional services would hinder quality control, maintenance processes and effective administration.
   
15. Is wireless internet provided in the apartments?
  Yes, each room is provided with a wireless router by the King’s College IT Department.
   
16. What size mattresses are provided?
  While most are standard size, some mattresses are extra-long (36” x 80”). We recommend you wait until move-in day to purchase sheets or save your receipts so you can exchange them if needed.
   
17. What are the desk dimensions in the Herald Tower’s and Vogue apartments?
  You will have one of two desk models with a surface area of 42.5" x 19.75" or 41.5" x 23.5”.
   
18. What about meals?
  King’s does not have a meal plan. Many students cook regularly as apartments are equipped with full kitchens. Grocery stores are accessible within walking distance (or, at most, a train stop away), along with a wide variety of restaurants and places to take out. Refer to our Campus Housing Checklist for a list of kitchen supplies.
   
19. Can students have pets?
  The only pets allowed are fish.
   
20. What is the alcohol policy in student housing?
  No alcohol is permitted in student housing owned or leased by the College. This includes balconies, stairwells, laundry rooms, roofs and other common areas.
   
21. Can students have overnight guests?
  Overnight guests of the opposite sex are prohibited in King’s housing. To have over-night guests of the same sex, students are required to submit an Overnight Guest Request to their Housing Assistant, and restrictions apply regarding frequency and number of visitors per night/semester. A detailed explanation of this policy can be found in our Student Handbook.
   
22. What if I have a maintenance request?
  Maintenance and repair requests can be submitted online using the Maintenance Request Form. Students should only contact building security or the front desk in cases requiring immediate attention (e.g. flooding, loss of electricity).
   
23. Can I retract my housing commitment at any time?
  No. Contracts generally require a year-long commitment and are non-refundable. You may contact Residence Life at housing@tkc.edu for more questions about the housing contract.
   
24. What do I do if I have problems with roommates?
  While students are encouraged to address conflicts directly with one another, House Chamberlains and Student Life staff are available to intervene when necessary.
   
25. What do I do when there is an honor infraction in housing?
  Honor code violations are addressed in accordance with the Student Handbook (see section on discipline and the Honor Code).
   
26. Can I send boxes to my King’s College apartment before moving in?
No. The mail rooms in our midtown buildings will not accept packages until you’ve officially moved in. Once your packages arrive after you have moved in, please pick them up immediately. The package rooms have very limited space.
 
27. What is the cost of dry cleaning in Midtown Manhattan?
Prices for dry cleaning in midtown are a bit inflated compared to prices in other boroughs. Typically, the cost is $4 for a shirt, $5 for pants, $6 for a sports jacket, and $9-$10 for a suit. Prices vary, including higher fees in general for women’s clothing.
 
28. Will a vacuum cleaner be available for use in student apartments?
Yes. Students may borrow vacuum cleaners from designated rooms. You can ask your Housing Assistant for these room locations after you have moved into your apartment.
 
29. What should I pack for life in New York City?
