Frequently Asked Questions for the Ludlow Residence

1. What is Residence Life?
  The mission of Residence Life at The King’s College is to provide superior living environments and develop communities of accountability where students love, respect, and challenge one another.
   
2. What are Chamberlains?
  Chamberlains are students who serve in House leadership. They are responsible for promoting safe and healthy living environments in residential housing, fostering a community of accountability among residents, and providing periodic on-call emergency assistance.
   
3. What are Housing Assistants?
  Housing Assistants are students who are hired by Student Life staff to help with the daily administration of the Housing locations. They conduct monthly room checks, collect paperwork (Over-night Guest Request Forms, Key Replacement Forms, etc.), and provide periodic on-call emergency assistance.
   
4. How do Houses factor into my Residence Life experience?
  Houses serve as a primary means for building community at King’s. Please refer to the House System section of our website for more information.
   
5. Do Student Life staff live on campus?
  A full-time Student Development staff member lives in each King’s College residence. Designated individuals are on call 24-hours a day to provide emergency assistance.
   
6. Where is the Ludlow Residence?
  The Ludlow Residence is located on the lower east side of Manhattan on the corner of Delancey and Ludlow Street. The address is 101 Ludlow Street, NY, NY 10002. The residence is one block away from the F Train’s Delancey Street stop.

8. How safe is the Ludlow Residence?
  The building requires card access for entry. Every student will receive a card at the beginning of the school year. There are 24-hour, 7 day-a-week security officers present to monitor the building and visitors. All guests must sign in.
   
9. How safe is the Lower East Side neighborhood?
  While there is an element of risk in any city, The Lower East Side is known to be a safe area where young hipsters, musicians and artists dwell. Students can travel to and from campus safely any time of the day or night. We advise students to take standard safety precautions and call a 24-hour school emergency number for assistance at any time.
   
10. Does the building have an Emergency Action Plan?
  The King’s College Emergency Action Plan is available online.
   
11. How long is the travel time between the Ludlow Residence and Empire State Building?
  The door-to-door travel time between the Ludlow Residence and Empires State Building is 20-25 minutes, which includes a 10-minute subway ride.
   
12. How much will it cost for transportation to and from the Empire State Building?
  We advise students to purchase an unlimited 30-Day Metrocard, which costs $104, so that they can travel freely and take advantage of all that the city has to offer in the way of parks, museums, historic buildings, etc. Metrocards can be purchased in any subway station.
   
13. Is there a gym/health club nearby?
  Ludlow Fitness, just across the street from the Ludlow Residence, offers a variety of daily classes, state of the art equipment with built in TV screens, and promises a clean workout environment.
   
14. What is the availability and cost of laundry facilities?
  Laundry facilities in the Ludlow Residence are complimentary (no cost) to residents! The laundry machines can even send a text message to alert you when your load is completed.
   
15. What TV/cable amenities are offered at the Ludlow Residence?
  All apartments receive a full cable package through Time Warner with more than 60 channels.
   
16. Can a student purchase additional TV/cable options?
  No. The Ludlow Residence building staff handles all cable/internet matters, including account maintenance and technical support.
   
17. Is wireless internet provided in the apartments?
  Yes, the entire building is equipped for wireless internet. Each resident will receive a username and password upon move-in.
   
18. What comes with a standard room?
  The Ludlow residence offers single and double dorm-style rooms. For each resident, the room is equipped with a bed, extra-long mattress, desk, chair, refrigerator, microwave, shared bathroom with an adjoining room, and closet. Click here to view a sample room.
   
19. What type of mattress is provided?
  All the mattresses are extra-long (36” x 80”) and have double-sided capacity. One side of the mattress is firm; the other side is medium firm. The mattress material is bed-bug resistant.
   
20. What about meals?
  King’s does not have a meal plan. A large kitchen is available on the concourse level of the building and all rooms come equipped with refrigerators and microwaves. There are several grocery stores in the area, and a wide variety of inexpensive restaurants nearby. In addition, we encourage students to share meals together.
   
21. Can students have pets?
  The Ludlow Residence has a no pets policy.
   
22. What is the alcohol policy in student housing?
  No alcohol is permitted in student housing owned or leased by the College. This includes balconies, stairwells, laundry rooms, roofs and other common areas.
   
23. Can students have overnight guests?
  Overnight guests of the opposite sex are prohibited in King’s housing. To have over-night guests of the same sex, students are required to submit an Overnight Guest Request to their Housing Assistant, and restrictions apply regarding frequency and number of visitors per night/semester. The Housing Assistants will monitor overnight guests in the Ludlow space. In addition, all visitors are required to sign in and leave a picture ID at the security desk. 24. What if I have a maintenance request?
  Maintenance and repair requests can be submitted online. For maintenance emergencies go directly to the front desk and notify the security officer on duty (e.g. flooding, loss of electricity).
   
25. Can I retract my housing commitment at any time?
  No. Contracts generally require a year-long commitment and are non-refundable. You may contact Residence Life at housing@tkc.edu for additional questions about the housing contract.
   
26. What do I do if I have problems with roommates or suitemates?
  While students are encouraged to address conflicts directly with one another, House Chamberlains and Residence Life staff are available to intervene when necessary.
   
27. What accountability is provided since most students have their own rooms?
  We treat students like adults and expect them to take responsibility for their choices. At the same time, through the Honor Code (a covenant that each student signs as they enter the King’s College community), we cultivate a community of honor in each House. We expect all students, no matter what their age or class status, to hold each other accountable to live honorably as a member of The King’s College community.
   
28. What do I do when there is an honor infraction in housing?
  Honor code violations are addressed in accordance with the Student Handbook (see section on discipline and the Honor Code).
   
29. Can I send boxes to my King’s College room before moving in?
  No. The mail room in Ludlow will not accept packages until you’ve officially moved in.
   
30. What should I pack for life in New York City?
  Refer to our Ludlow Housing Checklist for suggested items. Please remember, due to limited space, that “less is more.”
