Through generous funding from Fieldstead and Company, students at The King’s College have the opportunity to spend two weeks in the late spring in Jombang, Indonesia, in East Java. For the first week of the trip, students will be housed at a pesantren (a Muslim boarding school) and will teach English to the students there. For the second week of the trip, students will be housed with Muslim homestay families. This trip will give students an intimate look at the daily lives of moderate Muslims in the world’s largest Muslim country.

Students should take Historical Theology (REL 312) or Islam (MCA 353) prior to the trip.

Eligibility: Students should be committed Christians, have a GPA of 3.5 or above, and be flexible and generous in spirit, as they will be living in a very exotic environment for two weeks. Applicants must be strong writers, as students will be writing articles about their experiences.

Trip Dates: Likely May 10-25, but final dates are not yet confirmed

Deadline: Contact Dr. Robert Carle at rcarle@tkc.edu.

Cost: The grant will cover the transportation costs, and the pesantran will cover most of the lodging and food costs in Jombang. Students should bring $500 each with them to cover costs not covered by the grant.
