What is Test-Optional?

2020. What a year it has been. It’s safe to say that applying for college during a pandemic has presented some very real challenges. However, it has also presented many areas of opportunity and innovation. One such area is how colleges have transitioned from requiring traditional test scores to becoming something called “test optional.”

“Test-optional” means we no longer require you to submit your ACT or SAT scores. This is great news for students who were planning on taking a standardized test this fall but are now unable to. Due to COVID, King’s is now test optional for the 2021-2022 admissions cycle. We recognize that many test dates have been canceled this year and have adjusted accordingly to meet students where they’re at. So fret not if you were unable to get one last test in.

The change to test-optional can affect your merit-based scholarships. At King’s, the Presidential Scholarship (which is our primary merit-based scholarship) is now based solely on your high school (and college, if you’re a transfer) GPAs. It’s more important than ever to take your classes seriously throughout high school.

With test scores no longer essential, King’s has incorporated two new required components as a way to get to know our applicants: a writing sample and an Entrance Interview. Reach out to your King’s Admissions Counselor to schedule your interview and ensure all of your documents (besides your test scores) are in!

No matter the college, don’t be shy–connect with Admissions staff and make sure to ask exactly what they require in lieu of the tests.
