The MCA Musical Theater Department will be producing its third staged reading of a musical this Fall, this time of one of the greatest classic musicals ever written, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel. Based on the play Liliom, by Ferenc Molnar, this deeply moving work tells the story of a carousel barker, Billy Bigelow, known to be a womanizer and a bit rough around the edges. To his surprise, he falls in love with Julie Jordan, a woman of quiet depth who’s not moved by the opinions of others. They find a commonality in feeling like outcasts in the 1870’s New England town they live in. Their relationship takes us on a journey of love, tragedy, and redemption. The score is known to be Richard Rodgers’ greatest work, with some of the most moving musical numbers in the musical theatre canon.

Directed by Misti B. Wills and musically directed by Virginia Hart Pike, this staged reading will be presented in the City Room of the King’s College on November 5 and 6, 2021. Tickets are free to all, and can be reserved on Eventbrite HEREAudiences will be required to wear masks and seating will be socially distanced.
