Founders' Scholarship FAQs

Where does Founders' take place?

The address for The King's College is 56 Broadway, New York, NY 10004. We are located in the Financial District of the city. You will presenting your speeches in the Founders’ Room on campus.

The competition will begin at Grand Central Station in Midtown Manhattan. We will meet at the center information desk and clock at the middle of the atrium in Grand Central at 2:00pm. The address is 87 E 42nd Street New York, NY 10017.

What is this year's prompt?

This year's prompt: The mission of The King's College is to transform society through principled leadership. Choose a leader from history as a namesake for the 11th house, research his or her life, and demonstrate how this person embodies the mission and ideals of The King's College.

When is my essay due?

All papers must be submitted through our online submission form or email to founders@tkc.edu before arriving on campus.

When do I turn in my presentation?

Please email your presentations to founders@tkc.edu the Monday before you are on campus so each presentation can be loaded by the time we start. Please convert all presentation in PowerPoint. Prezi may be used. You will be using The King’s College computer and you will not need to bring your own.

Who is eligible to compete in Founders'?

Any High school senior or transfer student who has applied for admission and submitted official SAT or ACT scores. All participants must have either a composite ACT score of 24 or higher or a composite SAT score of 1650 or higher. 

Is the scholarship  renewable for all  4-years?

Yes, students who receive the Founders’ Scholarship must maintain at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA, full-time status, and may not be placed on academic or disciplinary probation while at King’s. 

How long should my essay be?

1200-1500 words. Please double space and use MLA format when citing references. The Works Cited page is excluded from the word count. 

How long should my speech be?

4-5 minutes. You will lose points by going over or under the time limit. A media component or prop must be used during the presentation.

Who will I present to?

There will be a panel of judges comprised of faculty and staff members. After your presentation, two questions will be asked by the judges concerning the material in your presentation. You will also present in front of the other participants who are in attendance. Parents will not be in the room. We will be recording the presentations and the winners will be posted online.

When will the winner be announced?

Early April 2016

Should I use a visual aid during my presentation?

Yes. In fact, you must use some kind of visual aid or media in your presentation.

How similar should my presentation be to my essay?

Your essay should be an academic essay, written in a formal style. Your presentation allows you to summarize the main points of your paper and share interesting information in a more creative way.

Why should I participate in The Founders' Competition?

Previous applicants, whether they won one of the four full-tuition scholarships or not, have identified the competition as an ideal setting to learn about the quality of a King’s education and the caliber of their future peers. Long term relationships are built and it allows students to develop their comprehension of integrating culture and education.

What is the team building exercise?

You will be asked use your critical thinking and teamwork skills in order to solve a problem. There is nothing you need to prepare beforehand.
