Jessica Lee (’14)
Assistant Solicitor General for the State of West Virginia
As Assistant Solicitor General for the State of West Virginia, Jessica has the opportunity to intervene in injustice on a national scale. In one example, Jessica advocated for the First Amendment free-speech rights of Christians to publicly express their faith in the face of a discriminatory city ordinance; in another, she advocated for the right of states to enact religious freedom protections. Jessica credits King’s for preparing her well for law school and for her current career. “King’s helped me understand that ‘I can’t’ is never an option and that God has planted the will and the way inside of us to go the distance in whatever field we’re called to.”
Chris White (’09)
National Correspondent for Crux
Chris White is the national correspondent for Crux, the most-read English-language Catholic news site in the world. He covers the Vatican, the Catholic church in the United States, and the public policy activities of both. In the classroom at King’s he encountered “questions of how to protect life in its most nascent stages, of ethics around the edges of life and all the attending complexities, and maximizing the pursuit of the common good”—the same questions that have propelled his work. He aims in his writing “to help people communicate about contentious issues in a way that sheds light, not heat.”
Amy Leigh (Cutler) Wicks (’09)
Ph.D. Poetry, Victoria University of Wellington’s International Institute of Modern Letters
The King’s emphasis on writing, reading, and speaking helped Amy Leigh’s creative work to flourish. After graduating, Amy Leigh earned a master’s of fine arts at The New School. While writing her thesis, she developed an interest in New Zealand poet James K. Baxter, whose Christian spirituality was central to his life and work. Amy Leigh then began a Ph.D. program in New Zealand to study Baxter and write poetry of her own. Amy Leigh says, “Surrounded by mountains of books, I start my day reading my Bible. I need wisdom and discernment to navigate the ideas I am surrounded by, so I ask for it in prayer, daily.”
Peter Flemming (’14)
Vice President, Corporate Strategy & Development at Morgan Stanley
Peter is assistant vice president in the Investment Platforms group at Morgan Stanley, where his team’s decisions affect over two trillion dollars in assets managed by over 15,000 financial advisors. Peter is known for his thoughtfulness and reliability despite the pressure of coordinating across many departments. “One thing we often discuss in our team is challenging assumptions. King’s fostered an environment where I was expected to ask good and tough questions, and the professors and my fellow students asked me the hard questions in return.”
