Every year, bright prospective students from all over the nation visit The King’s College to take part in the Founders’ Scholarship Competition. The Founders’ Scholarship is extremely competitive, and includes a written essay portion and an oral presentation. Four winners receive full ride scholarships to The King’s College.
What does a winning presentation look like? Leah Contreras, a senior from Ossining, NY, was recently selected as a Founders’ Scholar. When asked what helped her succeed, Contreras said she thought that important to a winning presentation is originality, articulation, and confidence.
“I believe confidence is the most important factor,” Contreras said. “Once you have that down your message can flow naturally.”
Below is a video of her speech:
The Founders’ Scholarship brings together the best prospective students from around the U.S. to compete in a speech and essay competition. The full-ride scholarship entices those students who are committed to attending King’s and are willing to put the tough work of engaging and communicating ideas that shape the world. “After competing,” said Noah Hunter, Assistant Manager of Admissions, “participants walk away amazed by the talent of the other student in the room. It’s inspiring for me to see young student engaging with high level ideas and defending their worldview. These are skills they will need at King’s to succeed.”
Contreras was on a bus full of choir singers when she heard the news that she had been selected as a Founders’ Scholar. “I screamed,” she said. “To put it simply, I was elated.”
After being asked which House she would choose to be in, Contreras replied, “I’ve always liked monarchy so I guess I would go with Queen Elizabeth I.”
