On August 23, following several days of New Student Orientation, fall classes began at The King’s College—and the campus community welcomed the Class of 2020, one of the largest incoming class in the history of the College since its relocation to New York City in 1998.

Over 220 new students join the College from 43 states and 10 countries, an increase of more than 50% since President Gregory Alan Thornbury was appointed in 2013. Thirteen students join the community from other colleges and universities as part of the NYC Semester program. During the 2016-17 school year, the College’s total enrollment will pass 600 students.

“We were especially proud of these record breaking groups of transfer, international, and NYCJ students, who have come from literally all over the world,” said Director of Admissions, Luke Smith. “I can’t wait to follow their successes!”

Incoming students spent their first few days on campus participating in New Student Orientation activities, including activities with their House and the annual Great Race, which was won by the House of Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

On the evening of Wednesday, August 24, after the close of the first day of classes, students attended the annual Convocation Exercises, held at Trinity Wall Street. New students joined the King’s community as they signed the Honor Code at the ceremony. During his address to the incoming class, President Thornbury exhorted students to develop resilience and habits of mind and character during their years at King’s that would equip them to act as Joseph in the book of Genesis, working for the good of culture and the kingdom of God.

First-year student Michalah Bell from Redlands, California is the daughter of two King’s alumni and a member of the House of Susan B. Anthony. On the first day of classes, she reflected, “ I never pictured coming back to New York City for college, but after I visited King’s, I knew that’s where I wanted to be. I’m so excited to finally start.”

“On behalf of the Faculty and our Academic Affairs staff, I am delighted to welcome this year’s new students to The King’s College,” said Dr. Mark Hijleh, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty. “We are all anticipating a wonderful year of working together in our learning community in the heart of New York City, and pray God’s richest blessings upon it.”
