TKC Soccer Takes Doubleheader Sweep of St. Joe’s

The TKC Men’s and Women’s Soccer teams were both out in Brooklyn on Thursday night for a doubleheader with local Hudson Valley Conference foe, St. Joseph’s. On the women’s side TKC sits in 2nd place in the conference standings and St. Joe’s is 3rd. This game would feature the top six scoring leaders in the conference with Castrellon, Essex and Cruz at 1st, 3rd and 5th in the scoring race for TKC and Usta, Chernyakhovsky and Fahy at 2nd, 4th, and 6th for St. Joe’s. These goal scorers did not disappoint, as Essex recorded a 3-goal hat trick for TKC with 2 goals coming in a span of about 2:20 with under 20 minutes to play as TKC prevailed 5-3. Castrellon opened the scoring 5 minutes into the game on a great feed from Joanna Isaacs, and 8 minutes later Essex made it 2-0 as she finished off a throw in from Ann Majors. Usta of St. Joe’s would cut the lead to 2-1 before Castrellon netted her second goal at 34:44 to regain the two goal advantage at 3-1. But Chernyakhovsky would strike at the 38-minute mark as the first half ended with TKC leading 3-2. St. Joe’s would tie the game up quickly at 3-3 just 7 minutes into the second half, but Essex would score her second goal of the game, a free kick into the upper corner of the net and less than 3 minutes later she would head home another free kick off the foot of TKC freshman Maizy Medley to take the 5-3 victory in the important game in the conference standings.

The men’s teams would take the field next for what would be as equally as exciting of a game as TKC jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 20 minutes of the game. Felix Bravo would get TKC on the scoreboard first with a brilliantly placed free kick from 30 yards out that found its way under the crossbar for a 1-0 TKC lead. Exactly 3 minutes later Humberto Diaz would steal an errant pass from the St. Joe’s keeper and buried it in the goal as TKC would jump ahead 2-0. At about the 19 minute mark, Peter Murphy threaded a terrific through ball through the St. Joe’s defense which Zach Adams would collect and send to the back of the net for his 8th goal of the season and what would be the game winner. With 13 minutes to play in the first half Raul Urshela of St. Joe’s flicked a header past TKC goalkeeper Jacob Wright to cut the King’s lead to 3-1 as the first half came to a close. The second half began and about 15 minutes in Urshela would get his second goal of the game as he put home a rebound and St. Joe’s was now just one goal behind at 3-2 but less than 5 minutes later Bravo would slam home his second direct kick of the evening for a 4-2 lead and defender Seth Parks would add another TKC goal with under 2 minutes to play to close out the 5-2 conference victory!
