Josiah Peterson is the debate coach and adjunct instructor of rhetoric at The King’s College. He regularly teaches the Debate Practicum and has also taught courses in Persuasive Writing and Speaking, Argumentation and Debate, History of Economic Thought, and Foundations of Politics. He worked with presidential scholar Amity Shlaes in the course development and instruction of four courses: The Great Depression, The Great Society, Calvin Coolidge, and Modern Presidents and Economic Growth. In the Fall of 2017, he introduced a special topics course on The Rhetoric of C.S. Lewis, looking at what made Lewis one of the foremost Christian communicators in the 20th Century.

Josiah Peterson is a candidate for an M.A. in Cultural Apologetics at Houston Baptist University, where he has studied with Dr. Holly Ordway and Dr. Michael Ward. He previously earned an M.A. in Liberal Studies: Social Sciences, at St. John’s University, where he was a graduate assistant to the director of debate and professor of rhetoric, Dr. Steve Llano. Before studying at St. John’s, he earned his B.A. in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics at The King’s College. As a collegiate debater Josiah saw competitive success at the North East University Debate Championship, the America’s Cup, the Yale I.V., and the U.S. University Debate Championship, among others. He has competed in or judged six times at the World Universities Debate Championship.

His academic interests include the rhetoric of C.S. Lewis, the ethics of rhetoric, and the interplay of rhetoric and republican government. In 2017, he published The Electoral College: Critical to our Republic, the first book from The King’s College Press. He has published articles in First Things, National Review Online, An Unexpected Journal, CSL: The Bulletin of the New York C.S. Lewis Society, Mere Orthodoxy, A Pilgrim in Narnia, The Federalist, and Public Discourse. He has presented papers at two C.S. Lewis Foundation conferences and at the 2018 Lewis and Friends Colloquium at Taylor University. He has been a guest on the radio with Kevin McCullough, Eric Metaxas, and Steve Deace. He lives in Brooklyn with his daughter, Hosanna, and wife, Rachelle, who is also a King’s alum.
