Mark Hijleh


Dr. Mark Hijleh holds degrees from Johns Hopkins University, the University of Sheffield (UK), Ithaca College and William Jewell College. As a member of the King’s executive leadership team, he served first as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty from 2014-17, prior to being named Provost. Dr. Hijleh previously served for 21 years at Houghton College, where his roles included Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Director of Integrative Studies (general education) and a member of the Integrative Studies Collegium, member of the First Year Honors Program faculty (a semester-long multidisciplinary humanities studies program in London), and a member of the music faculty. He also served as task force chair for a number of regional educational initiatives in the Western New York area.

As an authority in the field of music and cultural studies, Hijleh’s three published books include The Music of Jesus: From Composition to Koinonia, Towards a Global Music Theory, and Towards a Global Music History. He has also written commentaries and book reviews for the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, The University Bookman, the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, and the College Music Society. An accomplished composer and conductor, Hijleh worked with the Rochester and Buffalo Philharmonic orchestras, won first prize in the 2002 National Association of Teachers of Singing Composition competition, and wrote two feature-length film scores. He appeared as a guest composer at Hertford College, Oxford, where he also lectured publicly on theology and music in the Holywell Music Room and has a long association with arts theologian Dr. Jeremy Begbie of Duke and Cambridge Universities.
