The King’s College is pleased to announce Dr. Joseph Loconte’s appointment as Senior Fellow in Christianity and Culture, a role he assumes while continuing as associate professor of history at King’s. The combination of titles reflects Loconte’s distinctive contributions to the College, both internally and externally. He will continue to teach his signature Western Civilization course in the core curriculum as well as electives at the intersections of politics, history, and religion while maintaining an increasingly busy schedule of research, writing, public speaking, filmmaking, and other public activities for the College.

Loconte says, “It is a terrific honor to take on the role of Senior Fellow in Christianity and Culture. The Christian story of grace and freedom is the deepest source of so many of our cultural achievements. In this new role, I hope to combine my passion for history and for storytelling in ways that speak powerfully to people inside and outside the Christian community.”

This senior fellowship formalizes the role in the public square that Loconte has come to assume during a decade of service to King’s. Last year, Loconte served as moderator for several major King’s events, including the 2018 Founders Day lecture with trustee emeritus John Beckett and a lecture by Dr. Michael Ward, senior research fellow at Blackfriars Hall at the University of Oxford. In 2018, Loconte also began filming a documentary mini-series based on his New York Times bestselling book A Hobbit, a Wardrobe, and a Great War: How J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis Rediscovered Faith, Friendship, and Heroism in the Cataclysm of 1914-18. This February, he will moderate a panel discussion on religious freedom co-sponsored by The King’s College and The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty.

Loconte’s commentary on religion and public life has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, National Interest, National Geographic, and National Review, and he served for ten years as a commentator for National Public Radio’s All Things Considered.

Provost Dr. Mark Hijleh says, “We are delighted to welcome Dr. Loconte to his new additional role as senior fellow at King’s. His list of distinguished contributions to King’s as a faculty member over his ten years here to date will continue to grow, benefiting our students and the whole institution. We are fortunate to have him in our Christian academic community.”
