We all need moments where we can escape the chaos of daily life and remember good and true things with interesting people. Events at Professor Loconte’s house, co-hosted with Professor Tubbs, provide those moments in abundance. On Sunday, August 12, a group of D.C. alumni gathered yet again at Dr. Loconte’s townhouse.

Each time D.C. alumni meet with the professors, we are guaranteed at least three things.

First, we are guaranteed conversation that forces us to use the degrees we earned, with topics like liberalism’s root in Christendom, statesmanship’s virtue in a fractured democracy, and the Hegelian nature of the Reformation (this was a real topic discussed).

Second, we are guaranteed food, often Italian, and always good. This is a non-negotiable and is chaired, sub-chaired, and staffed by Dr. Joseph Loconte himself.

Third, and arguably the most important, we are guaranteed opportunities to reminisce about old times. Many of us took classes together, so sitting in a room debating big topics feels oddly like a dream or déjà vu, like riding a bike after having neglected it for a long time. This is always mixed with the new—your college friend is bouncing her new baby on her lap with the same mannerisms she had one, or five, or ten years ago. Professor Tubbs still speaks with his hands and asks you to elaborate on your last point. Some of us still have not done the reading and are stalling and avoiding eye contact.

This time, the new part was Acting President Tim Gibson introducing himself to Washington, D.C. alumni. Gibson jumped in with gusto, answering a deluge of questions, sharing about the College’s new building, and even offering to chat with alumni afterwards. It was an exciting conversation.

As with gatherings before, we enjoyed good conversation, good food, good friends, and plenty mixing of old and new.
