On January 23, 2016—in the midst of a serious New York City blizzard—a total of 108 volunteers from The King’s College made the snowy trek to the Bowery Mission and Manor Community Church (which was known as New York Gospel Mission prior to a merger in 2015) for the second annual college-wide Day of Service.

“It really amazed me to see so many people come out to serve in spite of the blizzard,” said Davis Campbell (PPE ’16), City Engagement Coordinator at King’s. “I’m glad that the King’s community got to be a part of the great things that Manor Community Church and the Bowery Mission are doing in our city.”

At the Bowery Mission, 32 volunteers served food to about 900 people and helped reorganize storage spaces. At Manor Community Church, which is a church revitalization supported by New York Gospel Ministries, 76 volunteers served, and many stayed for multiple shifts—even those who had signed up for only one shift. Volunteers packed and moved dozens of boxes of books, cleaned and organized office and storage areas, and served in the food pantry by picking up, unloading, and sorting food donations.

“Pastor Andy Woodard told me that our Day of Service was quite timely, because their ministry has a series of very important initiatives on the table that depend on the progress made by the additional help that we provide,” said Campbell.

“I was so encouraged to see how many King’s students braved the blizzard to serve those less fortunate than themselves,” said David Leedy, Dean of Students. “They showed up snow covered (some of which was due to snowball fights on the way!), yet with huge smiles and hearts ready to serve. It was great fun.”
