Liturgy: “Cliché post-grad struggles and the deep love of God”

Recently, when voicing some of my stresses about the future, one person reminded me of something that I often find difficult to grasp: our God is a loving Father.

What is the King’s Liturgy? King’s Liturgy defines our experience together as a Christian community. It outlines the rhythms we celebrate with the Church at large: Scripture readings, Sabbath habits, and celebration of Holy Days and historical events.

This Week’s Lectionary Readings

Genesis 9:8-17
1 Peter 3:18-22
Mark 1:9-15
Psalm 25:1-9

This week’s liturgy is contributed by Isabella Jordan, religious and theological studies major, 2017:

“Remember your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love, for they have been from of old” (Ps. 25:6).

As a recent alum, I currently find myself experiencing the cliché post-grad struggles: finding the job I really want versus something that will at least pay rent, wondering whether the last four years of my life were worth the two letters that now follow my name, coming home exhausted after work every day but still celebrating because I have no more homework.

Day after day, I find myself getting wrapped up in these daily struggles, which will seem so much smaller years from now. Recently, when voicing some of my stresses about the future, one person reminded me of something that I often find difficult to grasp: our God is a loving Father.

Before you keep scrolling, pause for a moment and let that sink in. The Lord God, who created the heavens and the earth, who destroyed all but one family in a flood, who can raise the dead to life, who sent his only son incarnate to rescue us from the mess we created—this God is the one who loves us.

He cares beyond deeply for each one of us. He will not push us past a breaking point. He will not abandon us. He will not call us to something for which he will not give us the strength to do.

As a human being, I am constantly forgetting this profound truth. God has to remind me time and time again that he will provide the right opportunities at the right time and in the right way. He will not let any sorrow or season go to waste. He will not lead me to a cliff only to leave me dangling over the edge.

But unlike us who are so forgetful, God shall never forget his promises. He has granted us with reminders of his mercy like the rainbow, the sign that God will never again destroy the earth by a flood: “when the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth” (Gen 9:16).

While this too you have probably heard time and again, pause and reflect on the gravity of this. To this day, generations later, the rainbow is a sign following the storm that reminds us of the Lord’s mercy.

As you move forward through your week, may you be reminded continually of God’s deep love that will carry you through this season’s joys and pains.

“All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies” (Ps. 25:10).
