Dr. David Innes, Associate Professor of Politics and Chair of the Program in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics, recently published The Voting Christian and saw his first book, Left, Right, and Christ, reprinted in a second edition. We asked Dr. Innes to tell us what prompted him to write these two books.

Left, Right and Christ: Evangelical Faith in Politics

Both books began with a simple blog. After writing short essays for that for a couple of years, I started writing columns for WORLD magazine online. Meanwhile, Mark Russell, the publisher of what is now Elevate, approached Marvin Olasky, WORLD editor-in-chief and the provost at The King’s College, for a conservative who would be suitable for writing a book with Sojourners’ Lisa Sharon Harper that would be an Evangelical conversation between the political left and right. This became Left, Right and Christ: Evangelical Faith in Politics (2011; republished 2016). The exercise of applying political philosophy and Christian theology to the news in my column had prepared me for this in addition to teaching King’s courses like Christianity and Politics, Political Economy, and American Foreign Policy.

The Voting Christian: Wisdom for the Ballot Box

The Voting Christian: Wisdom for the Ballot Boxvoting-christian (2016) was prompted by two developments. First, my WORLD column had come to end on account of the magazine’s decision to de-emphasize editorial writing in favor of news reporting. It irked me that public access to more than five years of work depended entirely on the web links remaining live. So I wanted to give a selection of those writings a concrete reality, a paper and ink survivability. At the same time we are in the midst of a peculiarly puzzling presidential election, especially for Christians who are facing unprecedented political and social assault and thus would be open to a book of short, easily digested essays that offered them biblical political wisdom.

Both of Dr. Innes’s books are available on Amazon, in paperback and Kindle editions.
