Students Host Eighth Annual “Red and Green Affair”
One of the most anticipated events every school year is the Red and Green Affair, hosted the Houses of Lewis and Thatcher. This year, student leaders in both houses decided to "up the ante" for this year’s Affair on December 7.
Every year, students in The King’s College House System facilitate events for the student body using the resources available in New York City. Every Spring, the House of Bonhoeffer hosts a college-wide Super Bowl party. Several years ago, the House of Thatcher threw a birthday party for the Iron Lady, and all of the Houses come together for sporting and drama events each year.But one of the most anticipated events every school year is the Red and Green Affair, hosted by the Houses of Lewis and Thatcher. This year, student leaders in both houses decided to “up the ante” for this year’s Affair on December 7. Red and Green Affair events have always been held on campus and have functioned like a social mixer, but this year the Affair will be held at the Brooklyn Lyceum, and the theme is “Tales from the Jazz Age.” The Brooklyn Lyceum is a large, brick-walled warehouse space, which House of Thatcher President Maddie Whitlock says”will go perfectly with the jazz, speakeasy theme.”Attendees are encouraged to wear their best 1920s-themed outfit and come prepared to swing. Historically, the Houses of Lewis and Barton hosted the annual King’s student Christmas party. In 2005, the House of Lewis “cheated” on Barton and hosted the party with the House of Thatcher instead, and the “Red and Green Affair” was born. Red is the traditional Lewis color and green is the traditional Thatcher color. Since 2005, Barton has worn all black in mourning at the event, and Lewis and Thatcher’s presidents tell the story of how the “Affair” began. Hosting the Red and Green Affair off campus was the next logical step for a growing student body. “There are going to be certain benchmarks a college will meet as it grows, and maybe a tiny part of that is having a great, school-wide Christmas tradition,” said Whitlock. “We hope that our event is on par with all of the other positive changes that are taking place in the King’s community this year in the areas of spiritual life, leadership, student organizations, athletics, and more.”The TKC Jazz Band will set the mood for the evening with a set of jazz standards and holiday favorites. The band was founded by a group of men from the Houses of Lewis and Churchill last spring and frequently plays at school events and fundraisers.”We hope this event will be a joyful expression of ‘solidarity in festivity’ for the King’s community this Christmas season,” said House of Lewis Chamberlain Spencer Kashmanian.The Red and Green Affair will also feature a special musical performance by President Thornbury this year, along with swing dance lessons and a reading of “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” by Dr. Dru Johnson.This year, all Manhattan alumni are invited and encouraged to attend.
