High schoolers who love ideas and a challenge are in for a rich experience this coming summer at Summer Academy at The King’s College. Summer Academy is a week-long camp in the heart of Manhattan for high school students who want to dig deep into the moral and intellectual heritage of our society. Students explore the great ideas through readings of primary sources, lectures and discussions with top-tier instructors, and first-hand experience of New York City’s cultural institutions.

Summer Academy alumni testify to its life-shaping experience. Laura Bowling (Dallas, TX) immediately found community with her fellow students: “I have never bonded with a group of people so quickly. I loved interacting with the professors and making tons of new friends. The lectures were awesome,” and “I learned so much about myself, Christ, and college this week.”

This summer 2018, students can choose from among four tracks: Political Economy, directed by Dr. Paul Mueller; Business in NYC, with Dr. Kimberly Reeve; Leadership, with Brigadier General (retired) Tim Gibson; and Media and Journalism, directed by Professor Paul Glader. Each Summer Academy week will feature two tracks each.

For the first week, July 22-27, 2018, students on the Political Economy track will study foundational documents on economic thought and on the governing of society, and then wrestle with the issues animating current policy debates. The Business in NYC track will use New York City as a case study of the beginnings, development, and influence of free enterprise institutions, and of the interplay among corporations, government, nonprofits, and society in general.

The second week, July 29-August 3, 2018, Leadership students will study the decisions of political and military leaders during the sequence of events that led to the Revolutionary War in America, with a focus on the role of the Battle of Brooklyn. The Media and Journalism concentration will run two sub-tracks, Culture Reporting and Writing, and Sports Journalism. Students will interview a New Yorker, tour a newsroom, and experience on-the-ground reporting in the heart of the Big Apple.

Students interact not only with New Yorkers and King’s faculty, but also “get a taste of what it is like to be a student at King’s,” says Kendra Avila (Mason, OH). “From incredible walks discussing the historic developments of New York City to engaging in detailed discussions about manipulative political control with the professors, King’s Summer Academy provides the best NYC experience imaginable!” says Sitwat Atiq (Sugar Land, TX). Summer Academy is “knowledge, art, culture, and family at its finest.”

“The Summer Academy was my first time coming to NYC,” Amelia Lancaster (Medina, TN) says, “and it made the experience unforgettable.”

All meals, lodging, site visits, NYC travel, lectures, and one hour academic credit are covered in the cost of one week at Summer Academy ($1,950).
