Wednesday, October 12, Richard Swinburne will deliver a guest lecture titled “Are We Bodies or Souls?” at 12:15 in the City Room. Swinburne, who is Emeritus Nolloth Professor of the Philosophy of the Christian Religion at the University of Oxford, arguably has accomplished more for Christian philosophy and apologetics than any other scholar in the last century. He has published more than twenty books, including seminal volumes published in multiple editions and languages, like The Existence of God, The Coherence of Theism, Faith and Reason, Providence and The Problem of Evil, Mind, Brain, and Free Will, and The Resurrection of God Incarnate, to name just a few. The lecture will focus on a central argument of his most recent book, Are We Bodies or Souls?, which defends Cartesian substance dualism (the view that the mind or soul can exist independently of the body and brain).
