A Renewed Vision for Spiritual Life

This fall marks a fresh start for the Spiritual Life program at The King’s College. The revamp is being spearheaded by Vice President for Student Development Eric Bennett and Professor Dru Johnson. The new schedule “outlines the rhythms that we celebrate with the Church-at-large: selected Scripture readings, Sabbath habits, and celebration of Holy Days and historical events,” Bennett said.These activities will be referred to as The King’s Liturgy. This marks the first time since the school’s re-founding in 1999 that the school will follow a liturgical calendar. “We aim to help students know Jesus as the defining reality of their lives, capture a vision of God that overcomes competing loyalties, and form a life built upon Scripture,” Bennett said. This major re-framing of the school’s Spiritual Life program represents a marked interest in and emphasis on the spiritual as well as academic lives of King’s students.This new system aims to form lives based in Scripture and build upon the idea of true Christian community. Certain elements from the previous system are still in place or have been brought back. Fall Retreat will return this year when students make the trip to beautiful Iroquois Springs next weekend. Mentorship opportunities are also available for alumni and adults interested in working with young Christians at King’s. Adults who would like to contribute their time as mentors are encouraged to contact the college at mentoring@tkc.edu. Programs for church and city engagement remain this year, still run by pioneering students.New this year is REFUGE, a bi-monthly student-led service for with both worship and lecture elements. All students are welcome at these services. REFUGE is the renewed version of a prior King’s worship gathering called The Tent. Also new this year are Theological Roundtables, sessions that will be hosted by members of faculty and aimed to explore the tension between culture and faith. The first REFUGE gathering is tonight at 7:00 PM in the City Room of our New York City campus.The new Spiritual Life program will be enacted immediately.
