College Sweethearts Send Sons to Manhattan

Two generations of the Ohman family are tied to the legacy of The King’s College. Andy and Jeanie Ohman met at The King’s College when it was located in Briarcliff Manor, NY.The Ohman’s children grew up in the years following the the close of the Briarcliff Manor campus, but in the early 2000s, they received news that the college had opened a new campus in New York City with a new vision and a new president. The Ohmans were intrigued.”Funny enough, I was on my way to a university in California when my father received a letter in the mail from King’s, stating that they were now located in the Empire State Building and offered New York City apartments” said Anderson Ohman, the elder son. “My father asked me if I wanted to check it out. To me, a free trip to NYC was a no-brainer. After spending my first 24 hours in the city with the The King’s College students and hearing the mission of the College from Stan Oakes, I knew immediately that King’s was for me.”

Anderson enrolled in the College’s Business Management program in 2004 and took classes from Professor Dawn Fotopolus, who taught him invaluable skills that he uses today in Palm Beach, working in Florida’s real estate industry. Professor Fotopolus keeps in touch with Anderson and even features his work on her small business website.In 2010, Anderson’s younger brother Christian also enrolled at King’s. He is currently in the Politics, Philosophy, and Economics program and also worked briefly in real estate.

“When I worked in real estate, I found much of what I learned at King’s to be useful knowledge as a foundation for discussion with my clients,” said Christian. “Now I am pursuing a career in banking and finance, and I definitely believe King’s has prepared me, even as a PPE major instead of a Business major.”Andy and Jeanie both proudly encouraged King’s as an option for both of their sons.”Jeanie and I both had wonderful experiences at King’s,” said Andy. “We built wonderful, lasting relationships with spiritual emphasis, and we loved the east coast atmosphere.”Andy said that the Financial District location of King’s provides a different atmosphere than Briarcliff Manor. He believes both locations have much to offer potential students. “I believe the career opportunities are greater in Manhattan,” said Andy. He also noted that necessary support systems are available through New York City’s strong local churches.”My parents only ever said good things about King’s and the people there. Although it is now a different campus than when they attended, my parents really believe in the vision and leadership of the college.” said Christian.

Anderson noted that his parents explained to him that his experience at King’s would be different from theirs, primarily due to the location change. They said that the level of education has improved since the time of their attendance.”I think the mission statement of the college is what really enticed all of us,” said Anderson. “To create and build strong academic leaders who go into the workplace with other leaders and be able to compete. All the while being the salt and light that Christ has called us to be in the world.”

“The opportunity and experience that this city setting offers, to me, is incomparable,” said Christian.
