Fall Retreat Brings King’s Community Together

"Once a year, at the beginning of the year, we need to repair to the mountains, and be together, all together, in solidarity--faculty, students, staff, and administration." –Dr. Gregory Alan Thornbury

NEW YORK CITY – October 9, 2015 – On September 10-12, over 400 faculty, staff, and students from The King’s College boarded buses for the Catskill Mountains to participate in a weekend of worship, learning, team-building, and fun at the annual Fall Retreat.

The event, hosted at Iroquois Springs in Rock Hill, New York, included plenary lectures from President Gregory Alan Thornbury, Dr. Dru Johnson, Bethany Jenkins, and Dr. Anthony Bradley, as well as worship led by the Refuge Band. During breakout sessions, students chose from among fourteen workshops focused on spiritual disciplines, led by faculty and staff.

Part of the goal of Fall Retreat is to develop friendships among new and returning students in each House, so the weekend also included team building events, dodgeball, a bonfire, and the highly-anticipated Drama Competition, in which each House writes and performs a short skit based on the theme for Interregnum. For the 2015-16 school year, the theme is “Ambition,” and the House of Corrie Ten Boom won the competition.

“During my years as President at The King’s College, I can honestly say that there are very few events absolutely every student ought to attend,” said Thornbury. “At the top of that list is Fall Retreat. Yes, we are city dwellers, Gothamites, and we love every minute of it. But once a year, at the beginning of the year, we need to repair to the mountains, and be together, all together, in solidarity–faculty, students, staff, and administration. It’s irreducibly Kingsian.”
