This past weekend, The King’s College hosted Parents Weekend, an opportunity for parents to see what their sons and daughters are experiencing on a day-to-day basis at The King’s College and to connect with other parents. Events included a Parents Welcome Reception with Vice President for Student Development Eric Bennett on Friday night and breakfast, faculty lectures, campus tours, and a high-tea luncheon and address from the President of The King’s College, Dr. Gregory Alan Thornbury, on Saturday. Parents had no scheduled activities on Sunday, so that they could attend church and spend time with their students.

“The purpose of Parents Weekend,” says Student Services Coordinator Katie Steele, “is to give parents a sense of the journey their students have been on since the start of the semester.” She continued:

In a short amount of time, students have to come to know their roommates, attended Fall Retreat, participated in the House Drama Competition, and experienced academic life at King’s. By offering one-hour faculty lectures, campus life updates, and opportunities to hear from and chat with fellow parents, our goal is to share the King’s experience, and our hope is that they feel as much a part of the King’s community as their children do.”

Karen Graham, a member of the Parents Advisory Council, says that by Parents Weekend, “students have adjusted to life in both college and in New York City and are typically ready to take the lead in sharing their experience. She continues: “The weekend also provides parents the chance to encourage their students, as they have done and accomplished so much in the short time since orientation weekend.”

Over 100 parents attended the weekend, and over $12,000 was raised to benefit the athletics program during the high-tea luncheon on Saturday afternoon.
