Let’s be honest, interviews can be intimidating. You want to make a good first impression, especially if the next four years of your life may well depend on it (or at least it may feel that way, am I right?). Now that most colleges are test optional, the Entrance Interview is becoming an essential part of the admissions process for many schools, including King’s.

Thankfully, there are some simple things you can do to ensure you leave the (Zoom) room feeling confident.

  1. Do your research. – It may seem like a no-brainer to show up prepared for an interview, but you would be surprised at how many students know very little about the college they are interviewing for. (I know, shocking.) At the very least, make sure you show up with a strong idea of which specific major(s) you’d want to study at the school. Admissions Counselors want to know you are genuinely interested in what the college has to offer and have taken the time to learn more about various programs and opportunities that are specific to the school.
  2. Take your time. – Some of the questions that your Admissions Counselor may ask you will be an opportunity for them to gauge how you think. Don’t let your nerves get the best of you and think you have to answer every question immediately. If a question comes up that requires you to think critically, it was probably designed for that purpose! Take the time to pause and think about your answer. Your Admissions Counselor will want a thoughtful answer over a rushed one. Allowing yourself to pause before answering can show care and consideration which will only benefit you.
  3. Prepare to share. – Interviews are a chance for you to share about yourself and show your Admissions Counselor the person behind the application. We genuinely want to hear your story! Be prepared to expand upon your interests, your goals, and why you are interested in attending the college. Knowing yourself helps us know you too, so come ready to answer questions about yourself.
  4. Ask questions. – When all is said and done, we all want to ensure you go to the college that is best suited for you. So feel free to ask questions! Take the opportunity to learn more about the college and see if it’s a good fit for you. Plus, it shows your Admissions Counselor that you are eager to know more and you are being intentional throughout the college decision process.

We hope you feel empowered as you prepare for your interviews. Your Admissions Counselors are excited to connect with you and get to know you better, both as an applicant and as an individual. So take a deep breath and get ready to rock your interviews!
