The King’s College is pleased to announce the appointment of Rev. Dr. William J. Abraham as a senior fellow. Abraham is an accomplished theologian and scholar, having served for over forty years as a minister in the Methodist Church in Ireland and as a faculty member at colleges and universities in Ireland and the United States. Abraham will represent The King’s College at the Dallas events of its national lecture series, The King’s Forum.

Abraham is the Albert Cook Outler Professor of Wesley Studies at Southern Methodist University’s Perkins School of Theology. He is the author or editor of over 20 books and over 100 articles and book reviews on such diverse topics as evangelism, the inspiration of Scripture, Methodist and Wesleyan theology, terrorism, and the existence of God. He has recently completed a three-volume series on systematic theology for Oxford University Press.

Not only is Abraham a respected author, but he is also a sought-after speaker; in addition to lectures at Oxford, Harvard, and Notre Dame, he has delivered over one hundred presentations on four continents.

Abraham is the recipient of many awards, including the Pew Evangelical Scholars Program Grant, the Best Book Faculty Award for Canon and Criterion in Christian Theology: From the Fathers to Feminism and appointment as Altshuler Distinguished Teaching Professor at Southern Methodist University, which is the highest teaching award granted at SMU. In 2018, he received the Faculty Career Achievement Award from SMU for his “remarkable contributions across the scope of a career” and his “extensive work and dedication to Perkins and Southern Methodist University.”

President Tim Gibson said, “Dr. Abraham’s output as a scholar, as well as his commitment and insight, is tremendous. Even more impressively, he lends a generous, patient spirit to discussions of difficult topics; he models Christian scholarship practiced with excellence and charity. I am grateful for Dr. Abraham’s service and friendship, particularly in the arena of The King’s Forum national speaker series.”

Abraham serves on the General Commission on Unity and Interreligious Concerns of the United Methodist Church, and is an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church. He is a member of the American Academy of Religion, the American Philosophical Association, the Wesleyan Theological Society, and the Society for the Study of Orthodoxy and Evangelicalism.

A native of Ireland, Abraham received his B.A. from Belfast University, M.Div and D.D. from Asbury Theological Seminary, and D.Phil from Regent’s Park College, Oxford University. Abraham lives in Dallas, Texas.

Upon his appointment, Abraham said, “It is a great honor to serve as a senior fellow at The King’s College. King’s is a place for serious engagement with the deep content of the Christian faith as it relates to the many intellectual and spiritual challenges Christians face in today’s world. I eagerly look forward to adding my own voice to the lively conversation already in place; I am delighted to bring the resources of my own scholarship to the table; and I anticipate taking on board the benefits of a fresh articulation of the Gospel without apology. This is a wonderful opportunity that I welcome with humility and enthusiasm.”
